Haha, thanks and welcome! There's so many posts to read @_@ But wow, a lot less people than I thought are self inserting... Like others commented before me lol.
[quote="Kikki"]Me too, a little bit. Shan suggested I might be able to extend my playtime by writing fan-fiction about the story and my MC (whatever character I make her) and I might try that, with Trio. I am at least going to write out a character outline when I have my hands on the game. You know, give her all the same details the the bachelors and bachelorettes get.

A character outline huh... a profile like the other the other characters have... HMM. Probably a good and fun idea! Though I'd have to classify my character as a hair changing maniac, because I can never settle on just one in these games when given the chance to. Who knows how many times I changed everything in SoS...
Sorry for the random reply from the first page stuff. I read almost everything else though, haha.

I always use my own name (even in otome games, since it's also a common name in Japanese.. Animal Parade was a problem though because not only was there a character who basically had my name, there was a Fin too) and make my character resemble me because I'm less likely to get sick of their appearance, but I don't really see it as a self-insert because I feel no connection to the MCs. Even though they're silent I can tell they don't act like me.

Hope it helps Kikki!
And yeah, kinda like a profile.....ish? Whenever I play I'd be like: "how'd the characters interact without the MC present" or something.

It's hard to self-insert since I can't ever really see myself pulling off more than half the stuff vg characters do. Nor am as I saintly/agreeable as them. I wouldn't let half the « Cow Poopoo » the resident jerkface throws at me go unchecked nor would I like being bound to the choices of either sucking up to them or being an « Mr.Gourmet's hat » (or in the rare case being honest in my indifference). Oh, the bridges I would have burned...
But in all seriousness, while I do use my name/nickname sometimes in games (in the case of Dragon Quest the immersion in those games are real and I really do feel as if I'm part of the adventure otherwise, it beats calling my MC 'Hiro' [get it?] when I'm really scrapped for names and time) the characters I create are nothing like me in personality or appearance (mostly, I'm dark-skinned in rl so I like my chars to be the same when given the opportunity unless personal rp reasons keep me from doing otherwise). I get to create an anime styled hero I'm gonna damn well do it!
Otherwise, I'm full-blown roleplaying. Those guys are my avatar in that strange new world and it's my job to make them the hero (or in this series case, best darn farmer around) they were destined to be. I already have a small backstory made up for my Trio protag and everything his family and my preferred skin-color...

I never self-insert in these games, but I do always have an elaborate backstory for my MC (for example in SoS why the MC decided to start their own farm and has no contact whatsoever with their family) and that kinda influences how I see the story unfold with different characters

Yes and no. On the one hand, I would never be the farmer type, I love the city too much lol. However, I always name my character my actual name (Nadia) if I'm a girl, and my name backwards (Aidan) if I'm a boy. I always give them my skin color, brown, but other than that there aren't really rules. I'm a gay lady, but tend to play straight and don't really crossdress.
I guess it's really a mixture, but I tend to view my character as myself or an extension at least, but maybe like a different type of me. Like an alternate me lol.

I never self-insert, because I think it's fun to make each playthrough have a different personality and backstory that I can think about. Even in the games where you can't change your physical appearance, that's when I really go into headcanon. ex, this time Claire is short and cuddly and likes visiting people everyday, and in another file she's tall and moody and only talks to gotz, haha. Little things like that to make the game more interesting for me.

I think the way people would talk about 'this' issue or 'that' issue breaking their feeling of immersion made me think that more people played with what I would consider 'full self-insertion', but it looks like that's not true.

Whether it ends up extending my play time (so that I can get to see every event I want to rather than quitting before I get the ferris wheel or see my kids 'grown-up', SoS-style) or not, it'll be fun to try to embed my MC as fully into the Trio of Towns world as the NPC characters.
talesofthreetowns posted 'assorted trivias' pages for both the bachelors and bachelorettes of Trio a while back (I didn't link it since they have a LOT of detail, which some might not want to see.) so I want to use that as a sort of template...make a page for my MC that's like the candidates all get with lots of info on there favourite/loved/liked/disliked/hated/etc dishes, the style of clothing they like, favourite pets, etc.
Then when it's time for a second file, I'll do it again

I want to try to really have a firm sense of who my MC is in the Trio universe, this time...which shouldn't be a problem, since I had no issue in ANB but lost my way all the time in SoS, I think because her purpose in that world didn't seem very important, to me. (Attracting more vendors to the town...who cares? Well, I didn't, anyway.) Trio of Towns has loads of opporunity for the MC to seem 'important' to everyone, this time. :D

In my case, the answer to this question depends on which gender I´m playing/preferring in the game, so it also depends on which game it is.
Sometimes I play as myselfe and sometimes I just pick the female MC to marry one of the bachelors to discover new storylines and play in different ways.
I often take the chance to play as someone different, when it´s hard to identify with a MC.
Especially when you can´t customize them.
But that´s really not bad, because I like trying new things.
In ANB I played as myselfe in the first savefile and in the second one I played totally different, but I don´t identify the MC as myselfe evertime, so there is no story for me like traveling to forget me not valley, marrying there someone and then I break up to start new in a new game. It´s more like different stories for me, where every MC is a different person or in a different universe.

My FeMC is not me but we usually share a name / nickname.
My MaMC is even less "me".
I like escaping somewhere that I don't have to be myself, living with chronic illness and pain will do that.

I like to play a character that looks like me as much as possible. This will be the first game (with customization) that she won't. Mainly because we know what MC's family looks like.

I also couldn't use my name if I wanted to, it's 9 letters.

I do sometimes make them look like me though.

I always ~create a character~ rather than try and make the MC 'me'. Maybe because I grew up with games where character customisation wasn't a thing/you'd hardly ever be able to play as a girl even, or maybe just because I prefer being someone else in games!
Also I don't dislike my name, but I feel like there are a bunch of nicer names that I'd rather give my farmer.

My most common character name in these games is a potential nickname for my name, but it's not the nickname that I actually go by. It's basically a tradition that started back in the NES era. Doing an true self-insert would be impossible for me. I'm always head canoning my character to be around 15-20 years younger than me for a start. Since I adore growing things and playing in the dirt, there's always something I share in common with any BM protagonist though. Certainly, some of my feelings and preferences will translate to the choices I make in the game. If a character makes me uncomfortable or does something in an event that hardcore bothers me, I will choose not to woo them because the point of the game is to have fun not feel something negative. It's rarely an issue though, and I do tend to give my MCs different preferences and personalities.
