I know that the animal one doesn't start till Summer, so that has more time, but how early should I get a Cow to win the easiest difficulty?

For the crops, does the Soil do anything? Or just use the fertilizer and potatoes since they grow the longest for now?

I bought my cow around mid spring, and by taking it out every sunny day and giving it treats I won the festival. If you chose the tycoon trait and can buy the cow even earlier, you should not have any problem wining it.

The better soil makes your crops grow faster. A tip to win the crop festival on the first spring. Plant the seeds and do not water them. As long as they don't sprout, they will not wither. Also, they last a few days without water before withering after sprouting, so you can keep fertilizing longer. Just make sure they will get enough water to mature before the festival. I did this and managed to get potatoes with the first parameter being 100% when harvested.

Each crop needs a certain amount of water to mature. Watering once gives it 1 water point, and watering a second time that day gives an additional 0.5 points. So watering twice a day you get 1.5 water points. The better soil gives you 1.5 water points the first time you water, so you can get 2 water points per day if you water twice using the good soil (but you need Tsuyukusa to be rank C before you can start getting that soil, so you won't be able to use it for a while). Potatos need 7 water points. Rain will give 1 water point.

To my surprise, I won my first crop festival with a 1-star bellflower (it had 57 points if I add up every point in the categories.) Ford's line if you win a low-level contest is hilarious, lol. It's like...totally pooh-poohing your win at such a low level, and yet, majorly flattering with the way he says it.

He is fast becoming a favorite of mine.

I like how relaxed this entire experience has been so far. I feel way less frustration/pressure at winning fesitvals and befriending people. It makes the festivals that much more enjoyable IMO.

So don't need that much effort then, did you fertilize your flower every day?
