So what is a good strategy for the mining spots? Like the guide says and sometimes wait or do the save and reload trick if you don't like what you get?

I go mining anywhere between every other day, to every three days. Waiting gives the possibility of getting better gems and minerals. For example, mining every single day will basically only get you rocks, bricks, or scrap metals. Waiting 2 days to mine can increase chances of getting better gems for crafting cloths or farm circles later. I always save before mining, and if I didn't get anything good, I reload my file, since it resets the mining nook itself. Increasing hammer quality later will also unlock more mining areas too.

Early on what am I looking for in mining? Also is there anything that's just always junk and I should just sell right away?

The only thing I've sold have been the Sand Roses I've collected, everything else I'm saving for tool upgrades. And I don't know if it just my luck or not but I have a really hard time finding crystals. Which are a major component of upgrading your watering can.

Right now I've been going every day. I didn't know you get worse stuff for it but honestly a lot of what I need is rocks and what not for house upgrades so that's fine with me.

I tried save scumming a few times after I had mined just the day before, and got the desired results like I did in SoS (for example, first try I got junk ore and rocks, second try then more rocks, third try got copper, rubies, amethyst and iron). I only tried it for one day on all three mining points availalbe to me so far though, so no guarantees if it will continuously work on a daily basis.
