So far (currently on Summer 4 year 1) the only place I've found black branches is from the offering/item swap place on the wifi island. I hope it'll unlock in the fields as more time passes.

I've gotten some black branches from pets that forrage for materials, or from finding a '?' if your walking your pets. The only other option early on in the game, is from wifi trading.

Aside from the cutting down trees from your expanded farm later on in the game. The only really good way of getting both black lumber, and black stone, is to buy it from the material stop in Westown. I think you need C rank unlocked to start buying it though. And you will need black stone for house upgrades later on. Definitely get your farm ranks up for this. And tip, grow and save 30 sweet potatoes for a rank cap. I think you need these sweet potatoes to unlock Westown rank C? I could be wrong... But I got stuck without having them because I didn't rank up Tsuyukusa fast enough to unlock + grow 30 of them before year 2 started. I had actually unlocked them at the end of fall year 1, and would have to wait until fall year 2 to unlock Westown rank C, and buy a bunch of black stone and lumber, to upgrade my house past large house (I don't recall the exact names).

The black stone will be much more difficult to obtain than black lumber. The only other way I seen you could get black stone was from fishing in Lulukoko, or get 30 of them by gifted Dessie. But you can get the black lumber from cutting down all the black lumber trees. You'll only get 30 from Dessie though and you need roughly 60 of them... Save up!

So alright....do you need to have the Asian themed town to an specific rank to get sweet potatoes? Or do they just unlock during summer?

Edit: My bad, it is Westown rank B that unlocks the Black Lumber and Black Stone in the material shop. The cap task is "Talk to Brad to get a request. Give him 20 flour and 20 sweet potatoes".

Based on that, I'm pretty sure you unlock sweet potatoes from Tsuyukusa in rank C. Being in a specific season may or may not be a factor. But they did become unlocked after I ranked up Tsuyukusa during fall of year 1.

You can buy season specific seeds during that season and the last week of the previous season. In the case of sweet potatoes, they are fall crops (so you can buy them from Summer 25 to Fall 31) and you need to rank up Tsuyukusa once (to rank D) to be able to buy them from Hinata.

Yeah that was my issue, I didn't upgrade Tsuyukusa until the end of fall. So I could buy the seeds buy couldn't grow 20 sweet potatoes in time. :(

Also, I mixed them up! You can get black stone from mining. It was the black lumber that was scarce in the game. You can cut down the 3 ish black lumber trees once your farm is expanded, but after that you can only get them from fishing it seems...
