Livestock Personality Traits?

So, I know what the basic effects of the animal personalities are, and Timid/Active seem the most useful on first glance:
Timid: # of products +
Active: product * level +
Gentle: coat/appearance +
Cheerful: animal friendship +
Calm: animal health +
But I'm not sure what the actual effects of any of that is. (I got my first cow with Cheerful to help with the early contest festivals, and now I need to get another.)
Cheerful make your animal gain hearts more quickly (as opposed to the Animal Lover trait, which gives them a 1-heart starting bonus), but how exactly do the others work? Do Timid & Active give a % random chance of harvesting a higher-than-usual number/quality of products on any given day, or do they help you level those up more quickly like Cheerful? Does Timid increase the maximum harvest cap over the default? Does Calm just keep stress & sickness lower or increase maximum animal lifespan?
And most importantly, to what extent do any of them actually impact the animal in question? If the Timid/Active bonuses are tiny, maybe Cheerful is the best after all, helping improve the quality of the products directly.
What livestock personality seems to offer the best benefits?
