I try to put an egg in the incubator and it tells me it's only for fertilized eggs? What am I doing wrong?

That confused me at first too! Turns out you have to put the chicken on it, not the egg.

Does the chicken continue to produce while incubating? Or is it like a pregnant cow, where you cannot get products until it "gives birth"?

It doesn't seem to produce anything while "pregnant" and I think (still waiting for a chick myself) it stays up there until the process is over.

Edit: Okay got my chick and the mother will go back to producing eggs the day after the chick is born.

Thanks for the tip! Now I'll have to decide whether it's worth it to breed or buy my chickens... hrm... Is it a 7-day gestation period?

If so, that would be a cost of about $2100 [ ($100 per egg * 7 days) * 2 adult chickens + ($100 per Chicken feed * 7 days of feed) ]

So I suppose you might save a bit of cash, but if you factor in the 7-ish days that it takes for the chick to grow to an adult, it's about $2800. So you're saving $1200. And that's only with really low-quality egg price calculations. So, maybe it would be better just to buy a new chicken from the animal shop, especially if you're impatient or just want to use the eggs for gifts or to fulfill shipping requests.

(Note: this is just using estimates from previous games on chicken growth and hatching)

This kind of sucks, I remember earlier HM games where chickens were the cheap animal that didn't require any shenanigan to raise(no brush, no clipper, no milker, no miracle potion to make pregnant, etc), now they're more similar to cows and sheep.

honestly i'd just buy a new chicken, if i didn't want the baby to already have a lot of hearts due to the mother having more hearts
