How to give gifts to animals?

How do you give items to wild animals/pets? Am I missing something here, because every time I try to give something to a fox or cat or whatever, it just falls on the ground. I tried leaving it there to see if they would eat it, but they don't?

Sometimes throwing it close to them works, since the animal will go towards it and eat. But I think the best way is to try to get next to them and put it in front of them (just as if you were giving a gift to a person). That way, they will just eat it at that moment. When the animals like you so much that they will go towards you, you should not move while the animal is eating, since sometimes they stop eating and go to where you are when the sense you moving.

Edit: After reading your question again, the item is supposed to end up on the floor, and you will see the animals get close to it and eat it. Move a bit away from it, if you are in the way, and wait.

Also. You can only give stuff to wild animals. You can't give anything to the dogs and cats you see around.

Sometimes is a bit subtle, but there is a noticeable change in how they move, showing that they detected the food and are going to eat it.
