I've seen screenshots of a bunch of trees growing in there before on a few help blogs (and recommendations to grow non-watering crops there, because it doesn't get rain)... I guess they have to be planted from scratch though.
You can plant whatever you want underground, as long as the season in that room allows it. But you can't move things around, so think carefully before sowing the seeds. In my case, I have one spring room, one summer room, and one fall room, with trees and tee planted accordingly.
