No one can realistically answer that without knowing your play style. I make a giant orchard and get as many animals as I can so my version of maximising space is different than someone that focuses crops.

Yeah this is true. There's that thing where the small barns are objectively better space-wise, but not gameplay-wise, plus they come with an additional *time* sacrifice. That is probably mostly noticeable on days where it rains, because of herding dogs, but still.
