Any fertilizer will do, and it's fine to mix-and-match as well. Don't use the expensive one that increases # of crops harvested, it doesn't increase any crop quality (and I suspect it lowers size, but I'm not certain)

Watering twice daily helps raise the Juicy quality, so it's basically like a free 2nd fertilizer that also speeds crop growth, so make sure you do that too!

The main issue is time. Most crops grow too fast to get to 2 stars before the harvest. Your best bet is Wheat, which takes about a month to grow and can grow in any season. You can also use a normal crop, once you've unlocked the Seed-maker, or a regrowable crop planted at the start of the season.
