Hammer upgrade?

Hi! I'm trying to upgrade the effectiveness of my hammer so I can use the other two mining nodes in Westown. It appears that the upgrade requires 5 ruby and 5 amethyst. I've found some rubies but no amethysts... I checked Cher's guide and it looks like you cannot find amethyst at either of the mining nodes you can use before you upgrade your hammer (whyyyy???!). Does anyone know how to obtain the amethysts? (Also, it is listed as for sale at the LogHouse store in Westown. It is not yet available in my game and I do not know how to unlock it.)

After you upgrade once, the node in the stairs in front of Ford's house opens. You get amethysts there. If you wait 3 days before mining the chance of getting amethyst is very high. Save before mining and try until you get some.

No, the one right in Front of his house, not the one to the left.
It's a crack in wall made of stone, not made of dirt like the other two, you can't miss it.

I've gotten numerous amethysts from playing multiplayer and sacrificing fodder to the stone tablet. That's another option if you don't want to have to wait a few days.

I got three the first time I hit the node, so I think I'll keep doing that because I'm so close.
