Hi! Sorry if there's already been a post about this, but what is the best, or most helpfu,l pet ability? I just built my first pet house and am planning on buying a gray tabby, but I'm not sure what ability I should go for. I will eventually want a hearding pet, but what collecting ability would be the most helpful? Thanks!

http://fogu.com/sos2/your-farm/pets.html scroll down for details on what each ability does
I like my Ore/Gem finding cat because she often brings me glittering stones and other useful items.

I think the most helpful is herding, that why 5 of 6 my pets are for herding.

Herding and ore collection, I have 2 pets for each purpose (since I have 8 livestock/chickens) and they're definitely useful for bothXD

So it sounds like herding is the way I go...
But I'm still wondering if the wild items, materials, or misc. items would be useful down the line. Are Ellie leaves, ginkgo branches, or animal magnetism/pet essences hard to find items?
Wild items: Elli Leaves
Materials: Gingko Branch and Sakura Branch
Misc. Items: Animal Magnetism, Cat Essence, and Dog Essence

Yeah I personally think herding is the most useful ability even though it takes forever to get their skill level ip

items not really useful cause it's a pain to level up your pet's skill on hunting, first you won't have time to take a walk, early level will give you like nothing. the one and only finder pet of mine can find ore but after like a year, she only level 4 and rarely find anything. even if she did she will find iron or glass stone.

Herding. However, find pet abilities to not be that useful this game since a lot of the animals you can care for them to get rid of the stress and the finding objects is not that useful. I mostly using heading to have my animals all outside for care though. It helps raise hearts faster as well.

I have a herding dog and an ore collecting dog. Those two abilities are my personal favorite, but it kind of seems any ability isn't as useful this time around.
There are plenty of mining spots and once you upgrade your hammer you get higher quality ore.
While I'm waiting for the herding dog to increase the number of animals, I discovered the bell actually works! I think in SoS it just gathered the animals to you, but not actually had them go in and out of the barn. In this game after hearing the bell the animals will herd themselves. I have to go tend to the animals anyway so it doesn't bother me. I was considering buying another herding dog, but I'm not so sure now unless I purchase more animals?
I like having the dogs so I don't regret buying them. Just like I bought a horse even though I don't really need it, haha.

I keep a lazy fat cat in the house to occasionally be useful by bringing me a dead, probably half-eaten fish it finds.
I also keep a pack of dogs to herd all of my animals. I named them (and tried to design them) after the
Canine Warriors from the videogame "Okami".

I have two pets that I use for herding: a Shiba (Matcha), and a Pyrenees (Somen);
then two pets that collect ore: a Calico (Lomein), and a Mastiff (Umeplu).
They're all named after food! Sōmen noodles, Matcha tea, Lo Mein noodles, Ume plum.
I don't intend to get very many livestock, and technically a high leveled herding pet could get all my animals in/out on its own. But having two herding animals is still really nice, because then the large coop and large barn empties at the same time! Very quick. +pet levels are sllloooow anyway.
The ore collecting pets are... just because I wanted to have a calico and a mastiff, but had no use at all for additional herding pets, so went with the only collection pets that are somewhat practical for me. They're also the two pets I may one day make my furmilliar(s), and I certainly wouldn't want to lose a functional herder!

Currently I only have a herding pet but I'm very glad to have him. xD Definitely speeds up my morning routine.
I plan to get a misc item collecting pet in the hopes of getting poison mushrooms and will probably get other collecting pets too, just because I like that surprise of occasionally getting something good.

I have a misc. items collecting pet but he never seems to actually collect anything. Is it once a week, or does it only happen at a certain affection level or...something? Well, doesn't matter. I just wanted a weimaraner because they look so pretty in the game with the sleek silver body and the bright blue eyes. Honestly pets are a pain in this game...taking them for walks is irksome as you have to run all the way back to their house to put them away if you realize you needed to head into Straw Market to pick up some more fertilizer (or etc). Plus they never succeed at treasure hunting until they have a higher skill level, or that's how it's been for me. Mine is at 7 and STILL fails to find anything half the time. At least winning the Pet Show helps, but other than herding, I've found pets in the game to be more burdensome than helpful or fun. I like having my one dog around in the house for the look alone, and that's about as much praise I can give. Haven't named a furmilliar yet...guess I should try that part, too.

I don't think the one in your house can do it's pet job. Mine can't.
For the others in the pet house, talk to them after 17:00, they usually have something.

My house pet has herding job and it still does its job

Not sure about other jobs though.
You can actually turn on and off their job through the animal book, just click on their ability to on/off their jobs.
