No, you can put up 16 small barn/coops. 4 pet houses per area.
You can't do any breeding though.
I would think 16 barns would be a lot more poop cleaning. 4 animals in large barns make one or two max.
That's a good thing to know when I move things.

Here's my farm layout:
Main farm: my fertilizer maker and fertilizer tank are taking up 2/6 plots right next to the house. The other four plots next to the house are used to grow random crops that are year-round, or take 30+ days to grow. All the area to the south of my farmhouse is for crops, as I have nothing but soft fields placed down.
West area: Thank « Harvest Goddess » for small barns/coops. Seriously, they fit so well in this area! I'm able to have all 13 barn/coops, 4 pet houses, 2 mushroom logs, and the rest of my factory makers. No lie, there isn't a single free space of land on this side, but I love the layout, so it works.
South area: I feel like the only person who doesn't have any barns down here. It's a big hassle having to run down here some days, so the top half has my fruit trees, maple trees, bamboo, three bee huts, and tea leaves. The bottom half is nothing but 32 fish hatcheries and four bee huts, though I recently got both the fish and pearl achievements. I might replace these with mushroom logs instead of bee huts; it's currently winter in my game, so bees are dormant. So much for getting the honey achievement, lmao.
If the Cellar counts, then I'm growing a ton of flax for the textile achievements. I have a Spring and Summer room for those respected crops that I'm trying to 5* max out with mega fertilizers too.
Thank « Harvest Goddess » rival fields aren't a thing. Even with food that slows down time, there are days where I don't leave my farm until 12:00.

Also that's where I keep my tea, bees, and farm combos.
Do you mind if I ask how many animals you have (and which), and where you keep them? Very curious about other layouts. I thought I had my farm layed out nicely but I'm surprised by how much I like pixelpixy's farm layout. Once I can start selling off some animals... I might do some small barns. IDK.

Sure! This is how it looked awhile ago:
It honestly hasn't changed too much, except i stopped needing pearls so i got rid of my hatcheries and moved the mushrooms up there so i could put a combo down at the bottom to raise the quality of my crops faster. But my barns are basically in the same place as always!
I have 18 animals. 2 cows, 2 jerseys, 1 sheep, 1 suffolk, 2 alpacas, 1 brown alpaca, 1 llama, 2 chickens, 2 quails, and 2 silkey chickens. I used to have a buffalo but i decided i needed a second alpaca more, so i traded it out.

Oh, neat! I actually really like your layout. Don't think I could do animals in 3 separate locations but I am actually playing around with the map layout builder (
http://ginsharine.sakura.ne.jp/farmcirclesim/index.html for anyone who doesn't know) and the idea of small barns for some of my animals and I'm loving what I am coming up with.
Thank you for the inspiration!

I was playing around with the farm layout tool yesterday morning before I went to college for the day, so was just now able to resume it and finish up what I have right now. I've made a couple of decisions since then on where I want to go with my empty space but I really wanted to share it, so!:
I have Inari's Shrine Replica and Coral Reef in the 3*2 spot by my house, Lulukoko Style Coop & Tsuyukusa Styled Barn, and Animal Play Place 1 for those odd labeled spots, btw.
I grow flowers (and normally 2 or 4 vine vegetables, so that I can make food for my animals) in the top bit and have all the animals in the two-part farm... but my pier-side farm is completely un-used, constuctively anyway. What I had there was 2 of each tree, but they were awfully crappy trees, and more than half of them were dead stumps from storms haha. And also some Lulukoko themed decorations--the... I can't check right now because I'm miiversing Inari's spousal event but the giant 2*2 multi-tree and a 2*2 blue fountain.
I decided I wanted to work on some of the crop trophies that I wouldn't normally legitimately grow, so the pier-side is going to become my spot for working on mushies and paddies! Then I guess I can shove most of the other kinds in the cellar (which is also currently un-used), and still have the pier-side also be for pretty decorations.

Having animals in separate places isn't actually that bad and I've found it pretty easy to build my morning routine around it. I'll stop at the liquid fertilizer thing first and get my water supply, go around and water/harvest all my crops (main=>east=>west) and by the time I get to the west part of my farm (and have made the seeds I need to replant in the seed maker) my dogs have usually finished herding my animals. Then I just take care of the animals on each map in he opposite order (west=>east=>main), and after I'm done with that I end up right back by the shipping bin so I can dump my haul, and then go do whatever the hell else I planned to do that day. I'm usually done between 11 and 12, sometimes earlier. Depends on how much I have to harvest.
