Have you ever ruined your file?

When playing ToT the second time I was going to marry Chase but I didn't know how the rival marriage worked in that game (first time I played I got married to Gill and he didn't have a rival which apparently threw me off the loop) and ended up accidentally getting Chase married to Maya. I only use one save file for each run because I'm an avid replayer so there was no escape in multiple save files.
I'm still kind of peeved at how the rival marriage works in ToT/AP games. And I never liked Maya after that.
Also, it doesn't exactly count as ruined since it's still my favorite file in any game ever but I did kind of manage to stop myself from playing RF4 completely on my first and most likely only run through. My initial plan was to first play as Lest, marry Forte, and get to know the bachelors before playing again as Frey and marrying one of them. Turns out when you befriend the bachleros they get pretty chummy with Lest too and I would've felt like I was cheating on them if I then turned my back on them and married a girl so I never got married (nor will I ever play as Frey because it's way cuter when the boys fawn over their favorite prince) and thus never got to play the one area you can only get to once you have a family.
tl;dr: Marriage woes.

So, back in Harvest Moon 64 days, I became convinced that I could have a daughter instead of a son but couldn't figure out what would trigger it. I made it my goal to woo every single bachelorette, get married as quick as humanly possible, and get her to have my child again as quickly. This lead to me dedicating the file only to that woman. I'd build up the resources and money for the expansions, pile on her loved gifts as soon as I could acquire them and just practically stalk the poor lady to find out her schedule and trigger necessary events. I got it almost done to a science and was often marrying by early-mid Winter Year 1. However, the baby would eventually come and it would always be a boy. Ann, Marie, Popuri, Karen, Ellie...always a boy child. I eventually got tired of restarting after the baby was born and tried to play the game normally after the birth on my last run but the file was often way into Year 2 for me to recover and make dad happy for the Year 3 evaluation due to to my single-minded dedication to only the girl NPC I was wooing. Not to mention missing out on other events and whatnot since many get closed off once you get hitched.
It wasn't until years later, when I was googling stuff for MFOMT, that I found out it's impossible to have a daughter on HM64. It's not even something that can be hacked in. The child will ALWAYS be a boy. Such a let down.

Yeah, she's the town librarian and the Mayor's daughter as I remember. She has long, dark hair and slightly nerdy looks like Mary from HM 64 and Mineral Town games. In fact, I believe Mary WAS based on Maria, if I'm not mistaken.Celestrian wrote:Maria? I can't remember anybody by that name in Magical Melody...assuming that's what you meant.
All five HM64 bachelorettes (which were reused in BtN and remakes) were designed after the girls in the original game, and are actually their respective granddaughters.
It is never stated if your grandpa (the main character from the original) actually married any of them, so there's the possibility that you might be marrying your cousin in HM64.
(Except with Elli, I guess)

It turns out it wasn't really ruined, but you know how in Magical Melody villagers can leave if you don't ship what they need to stay in town and neglect to talk to them for a season? Let's just say my nine or so year old self was none too happy when Gwen (one of my favorites, no less!) came to my door to tell me one morning that she was moving away... finishing the dialogue with a heartbreaking line that was something like, "If I come back, please be nice to me." I don't know whether I knew she could move back -- the game was really new at the time -- but even if she could, I was really distressed that she felt like I hadn't been nice to her until that point! And I think just her leaving really distressed me, because I quit playing after that, and stopped playing IoH as soon as I learned that characters can move out in that one too.
There was also the time I intentionally ruined an HM64 save by waking up and going back to sleep every single day. Yes, for two years. Just to see what the evaluation would look like! It was very boring, but probably not as boring as grinding the wine cellar drinking or showing Karen my dog like 1000 times to raise her heart level to pink because of that glitch. :')
EDIT: Oh! I'm really sorry I forgot to check the date of the previously most recent post. OTL I noticed it almost immediately after posting.
