Pet treasure hunt problem

Whenever I take my pets for a walk and do the treasure hunt thing, I'll press A when the question mark appears above my head, and about three quarters of the time my pet will just stop and sit down. I can't pick it or or interact with it in any way, and pressing A on the question mark spot again does nothing. I have to leave the map and then I'll get a notification as to whether or not the hunt was successful. This happens with both dogs and cats.
It's really annoying having to always run to a new area just to get my pet moving again, especially if I'm not near an exit.
Is anybody else experiencing this problem?

I don't mess with the treasure hunt so I have no idea. However, I hear it's a common glitch.
