how do you use fertilizer?

i bought some fertilizer and its probably something super obvious and im just being dumb, but how do i put it on the crops? pressing A just makes my character throw it around... thanks for any help and apologies for the silly question, i just cant figure it out! i tried to look up how to use it but found no answers about the actual button to place it down, so figured id have to come ask for help here.

Get close enough for the crop's name to appear in the top screen. There should be an "A" within a circle that means you can use that particular fertilizer, since not all crops have the same stats to raise. Crops sparkle after a successful fertilizing.

I use fertilizer by equipping it like a tool and standing on the crop fields while pressing the A button.

You're supposed to equip it instead of hold it the same way you would give items to other characters.

You "equip" it, not "hold" it like the others mentioned.
