Now you have me curious Kikki lol.
It's my curse. (Because I can't imagine it's my gift.) I know that the majority probably shrug and say 'that's just the way it is', but I want to know WHY that's the way it is, since it doesn't make sense to me. If a thousand items in the game HAVE no quality, and a thousand more do, and you can only raise the quality of 996 of 1000, and there's no explanation why you can't raise the other 4... I just don't get it, and it bugs me. I know I have to resign myself to not getting an answer, but I thought I'd at least see if someone actually had one, first. Thanks, everybody. :)

I'll just continue to scowl at my .5 pepper all by myself, lol.
ALL OF THAT RIGHT THERE OMG.

My brain tends to eventually blank that stuff though otherwise I go crazy.

See, that's what I was thinking. This type of game really does attract a lot of people who care about the details. I'd even go so far as to say that people who don't want to be bothered with details probably mostly stay away from bokumono type games. So even if most shrug it off without caring, there's going to be a decent portion who are quite bothered by it.

I did think they probably have to include stats for everything used in cooking (I'm sure they COULD make it otherwise but it's probably more complicated to make exceptions) but why are only pepper and curry powder stuck forever at .5 stars? Rock salt (and I've assumed truffles, since pets can bring them) can be raised at least to 2.5, which means they'll no longer be a detriment if your cooking skill is up (though I'd PREFER if they could be raised to five...why cap it at half?), but why can't just those two be raised at all? Why couldn't pets bring you, say, branch of pepper to turn into peppercorns or ground pepper in your mill? And the curry...well that's tough since 'curry powder' is really an amalgam of a lot of different spices, but...perhaps it could be a herb that you can turn into a powder. (Or maybe you could mix several types of foraged herbs/spices to make it, or something.)

I just don't understand why they made it so that those items can't be raised to the same level as everything else. Even though I know it doesn't have any significant impact on the gameplay, the aberration picks at me like a tag left in a new shirt...

Nice to know some people aren't thinking 'you're just ridiculous, that's all this is', lol. :) Anyway, thanks to anyone who was listening to my 'problem' even if you were thinking 'this is dumb, it doesn't matter!' :)

See, we can make cornmeal with corn, I agree with you Kikki that we should be able to make some of those items for higher star quality if we wanted. However if you're like me I rather buy everything.

Yeah, I definitely don't think this would matter to everyone, and maybe that's all there is to it...maybe they know the majority will not care, so they left it, because it's simpler (I'm assuming it's simpler). But to me, pepper should be a crop (IRL it's a vine...a pretty cool one with trailing strings of peppercorn fruits) that can be turned into the craft ingredient ground pepper. Curry powder, well...that would probably need to be a spice mix, say bell pepper or chili pepper plus peppercorns plus...I don't know, a herb or something. But also something you make in a maker. Rock salt could be mined and then turned into an ingredient via a maker, and truffles...I think they could just be foraged by hand (or by pets) under trees or something.

I just don't get why they just made them permanent .5 star items that you can only practically choose to purchase. Whyyyyy, Marvelous?

I'm just going to assume it was for the sake of making things easy, cuz I can't ask directly and I don't think there's much sense in cooking up some more complicated theoretical reason.

This has been bothering me as well… I assumed I'd come across a way to get 5 star pepper, etc. but looks like I assumed wrong. It makes sense that cooking items need to have a star rank, but not being able to raise it at all?

I remember in ToTT there was a similar thing with seaweed/curry powder/truffle/etc. but you could often get 5 star ones as request rewards… is it possible to get them as part time job rewards? Even then I think gifts cap at 2.5 stars as well. Seems like it would have made more sense to just leave those 4(?) items out if it's that big of a deal (who really needs curry powder when you have spice, and we've gotten along without pepper before…)

@Kikki Wish they had done it the way you suggested, it makes a lot more sense. I've been trying to figure out why we can't mine rock salt but pets can bring it to us???

From what I've experienced, you can't get them through jobs unless I'm missing something?

You can get them as gifts. I got a 2.5 star rock salt as a oh-you've-got-a-new-baby gift from Iluka (max FP) I don't know about others like truffles, though...and I had only been thinking about the stuff you can get at Acqua Pazza...I forgot about coffee from Westown. I don't think there is anyway to get more than .5 coffee packs, though I haven't looked into it...I definitely haven't gotten any as gifts or from pets, though. Shan probably came across that one, though, making Cafe Mocha for Wayne :)

If *I* can think of several ways that they could have let us raise the quality of those goods, I'm sure they were able to think of far more, so I can only think they just didn't bother...didn't want to add more crops or that the way they did it was just easier when designing the game. I've got no explanation. That's why it's so bothersome :) (Well, that and I don't like to see a chest full of perfect five star items and then the sporadic ugly blip where something only has half that...or 0.5!) Oh well. Not like it's something to boycott the game over or anything like that. :) It'd just be nice to understand the 'why' behind it.

Coffee pack is something you have to buy unfortunately. I never seen it as a gift, so that star quality will never go up.
