Just a fun little poll, since I know mining in the HM games can be controversial on what style the fans enjoy more. I personally prefer the mining nooks that the new 3DS games use, since it's a fast process compared to the other stuff packed for you to accomplish. However, the older games had a really great system for digging up staircases leading to other floors, as this style gave you something to do once your daily chores were over with, especially if you had extra stamina to spare.

my favorite mining style is a tie between the ds/cute version and the tot/ap version. i prefer the beasties to the gasses, but i also like the differentiation between rocks that'll give you ores and ones that'll give you gems and being able to pick up curative items on the way down via mushrooms and whack-a-mole. the puzzle-type mining in holv was also a lot of fun. it would be cool if they'd combine it with one of those others, but that might make the whole thing a bit overly complicated

I haven't played any of the games between DS and SoS, so I'm not really sure of the mining systems that happened between those two, but I am not. a. fan. of the DS/older game style mining. It's like spinning a random number generator for points, no guarantee that you'll come out with anything interesting in the end, and it takes friggin' forever to accomplish. Couple that with a dozen neat things (like tools that you can't get any other way) buried in random locations, maybe, on floors a hundred levels beneath the surface, and... ugh, no, no thank you. I don't want to do that ever again.

...So I am quite happy with SoS/ToT's system! Because even if it's still spinning a random number generator for points, you can game the system in your favour to get more valuable things, and it's quick and easy-peasy, so I can get on with the other way more interesting things I'd rather be doing with my farm and the townies.

I'm a big fan of the tree of tranquility/animal parade style. I liked that mining felt like an activity on its own, rather than just a stop to make on the way to doing something else. It took much longer, yeah, but I enjoyed doing it. I liked having to basically schedule a whole day for it.

I especially liked that if you were looking for something in particular, it was a little easier to find. You just had to search a section of floors for the right color of ores/wonderfuls, and then take them in to get looked at. It wasn't guaranteed you'd always find what you needed, but there was a pretty good chance of finding a specific thing if you took in a bunch at once.

It feels better than current games, where you kind of have to just cross your fingers and hope you get what you want, or save and reload. But thats just me personally, haha. I liked mining so much in tot/ap, I miss it!

AP's style would have been fine if it wasn't so luck based. I shouldn't be able to spend all day at the mines and then lose money. ToT's and MM's were good, the dig site might be cool as an addition to a regular mine, where you could find fossils etc., while the other mine had ores. Anything would be better than the current node system, which, again, sucks because its entirely luck based.

Hero of Leaf Valley's was fun. It's a puzzle to set up the rocks so they start a domino effect and all break, getting lots of ore in the process. Once you figured it out, you could make fat bucks.

But I also like the mining in FoMT where you could just leisurely take your time. The dark animals in DS/Cute were a pain.

My favorite style of mining is definitely AP mining. Was the most improved from the MM and HM:ToT mining. It was a very active style of mining and had the biggest payout. Head up to Upper Garmon mines with my hammer, herb tea (to caffeinate myself in case of sleeping gas), and some cold medicine. Wack as many moles as possible for stamina drinks and gather mushrooms for emergency food or money. I'd come out with a big stack of white and yellow wonderfuls and have Mira refine them for a huge profit off diamonds, topaz, ambers, opals, and crystals. And then I'd use that money to upgrade my tools and I'd last even longer in the mines before running out of stamina

This topic is making me consider playing AP again and I would except there are several other games I started that I have to finish. Yet I miss the mining part and I want to do it again. I'm so torn now. Haha

I enjoyed mining in AP the most. Though I like having the option of buying gems if I need them in a hurry.

ToT/AP the most. Not perfect, but I enjoyed it the most and I disliked how HUGE some of the DS versions had. Like 1,000+ floors is freakin' crazy and super unnecessary.

My favorite mine is the one from Sunshine Islands (imagine IoH as well, but I skipped that one). Time only counting when you went down floors allowed you to mine almost as much as you wanted, but still took the whole day if you wanted to go to the bottom.

AP is a close second I guess, but too random having to go check if you'd actually mined something.

Well ... it's something to do. Problem is with most farming games free time is the last thing I have, so mining cuts into that. Add to that I was raised on a large farm and not once did I ever go mining for raw materials ... just saying. If the game gave me more time to just farm and have social interactions, fish maybe, etc. I'd be ok with that. At least the games with set mining points makes things a little easier.

To each their own, but I will say I'm not too interested in too much realism personally. I'm pretty sure there are better farming games realism wise out there.

Not that I'm trying to go after your experience, just I keep seeing the realism thing in a lot of things and giving my personal two cents on it.

FoMT's mines were perfect.

DS comes pretty close, but there are just too many floors and unlockable mines. Two is more than enough.
