Only one real issue I have so far (besides feeling the need to upgrade to a New 3DS ... which I kinda wanted to do anyway). The story.
Spoiler:
It seems pretty obvious already that our childhood friend whose mother died is either going to end up being the bad guy, or he'll be letting himself be used by the bad guy. I mean dang, do they have to be so obvious about it. Having some kind of surprise would have been nice.
Honestly, it's a kid's game and was marketed more towards kids than the hardcore MH audience (it's practically a sport over there). You could even buy the rider stone and get it to make different monster roars. To add to this, all the riders are removable from the amiibos just in case people didn't want the kiddy designs on top of their realistic monster figures.

So, as it's kinda scooped together with all the other kiddie creature capturing games, the stories in them are never usually groundbreaking or anything. It should still be enjoyable regardless of it's predictability, but we really aren't their target audience. We've been molded by our game experiences and can spot tropes from a mile away while a lot of kids have yet to experience what we have.

So it doesn't really bother me much. They could have done more, but they took a safe route, which is fine.

I personally like the story I find it interesting even though there are other games with a better story(Okami)
In games I prefer story over gameplay and gameplay over graphics.Music is also an important factor when I choose the games I play and this game seems to have some very nice music in it.

Well just finished the demo. Over seven hours of gameplay. Not bad. I was really left wanting to play more, so the demo did it's job.

Do hope the full version has a bow though. I think I saw a vid showing a boomerang type weapon. But would love to have a bow.

Can't really figure out what I'm looking for when hatching monsters though. I did find a rare nest, but not sure I got anything good out of it. Not sure how to custom craft a monster using the egg pieces, but I assume that will be explained further in the full game.

I just recommend getting a New 3DS or New 2DS if you don't already have one.

Currently playing the demo, I've never been interested in the original monster hunter but this one piqued my interest, so far I'm an hour in and enjoying it, I'll probably get it for thanksgiving if it's still good (in my personal opinion) by the end of the demo, for now I'm closer to buying it than before, especially with them implementing a made-up language (much like gravity rush did) which removes the need for multiple dubs.

The Boomerangs are consumable items iirc, they are in the main games too, though if you're playing as a Prowler (a cat) in MHG you have them unlimitedly.

Anyways, there are only four weapons in MHS which are Great Sword, Sword and Shield, Hunting Horn, and Hammer, which are all blademaster weapons from the mainline games. None of the gunner classes made it in for whatever reason, but i'm sure it had to do with the animations of doing team attacks and other things with your monstie. Gunner classes don't ever really have a need to strike closely so i'm guessing it was easier to just stick with blademaster weapons.

And the made up language is Wyverian. It's been in all the games and it usually most heard in songs as most NPCs just grunt (or meow, cause cats). My favourite use of Wyverian is the Ceadeus theme from Monster Hunter 3 and Let's Nyance from Monster Hunter Generations.

That's a made up language? I just assumed it was something I didn't know. That's pretty cool they would use a made up language. I'll have to play through again and listen for that.

Yep. There's actually several different languages in the universe of Monster Hunter, but the most often spoken one is Wyverian as it seems to be the most universal. The Wyverian race are people with pointed ears, Humans are humans, Felynes and Melynx are cats, and there's a few more but but iirc, they don't show up in Stories.

Theres also dialects that range from area to area too, but it's far more easy to pick up in the Japanese versions of the games as their written out in special kanji. I'm actually really curious now if they kept the dialects in the spoken dialog for MHS, but I'm not that savy with Wyverian.

An interesting thing to note with the cat races, is that many are feral and decide themselves if they want to stay in the wild, or learn a language besides meowing and join society. You encounter a lot of wild cats in the mainline games that can't/won't talk to you (and will attack you) while there's also lots of them working along with the other races in town.

Well I just encounter wild pigs it seems. :P

I did note that we are going to have to have a team of monsters with specific move sets in order to get to certain locations, not unlike having Pokemon with certain HM's. I guess that will give you a reason to have a varied team.

Ah poogies, series staple. They only exist to be pet, that is all. You collect costumes for them in the mainline games. I like that they're now the collectable in MHS.

Another thing to consider in the final game is that you can breed/fusion monsters to get them in different elements. For example, the Lagombi(personal favourite monster of mine) is ice based, but has a fire variant in MHS.

There's an article detailing it here:

I have to admit finding the Poogies reminded me of that quest in DAO where you had to find the nugs.

The DNA combinations reminds me a lot of the more advanced breeding done in Pokemon. To be honest I didn't get much into that as it just got a little too complex IMO (guess I wasn't a serious breeder). If it's simple enough in this game I may give it a try.

Yeah but when I get it on the 8th it will be your 9th. Don't ask me how that works. Something about the earth being round or something or other. :P

Dropped my pre-order on it yesterday at GameStop. May not be the best place to get it but I like supporting our little local game store.

Talked to them about trading in my old 3DS XL for the New 2DS XL. Seems I'd still need to come up with $100 for the difference. Still debating that. I did notice some frame drop and a lot of texture pop-in's when playing the demo. But is it worth that for one game ... probably not. I'll have to see if other games coming out are taking advantage of the New 3DS & 2DS additional power and memory.
