Hmm ... just realized (after 35 levels) that I made my character look just like Misty from Pokemon. Now I feel the need to switch her to water using monsters ...

I'm pretty sure I have really screwed up some monster gene splitting though. I have some monsters that I gave a lot of FIRE genes to, that ended up learning lightning attacks (Opps). I guess I need to figure out what these monsters are going to learn before editing their genes, or at least wait until they're level 25+ so I can see what attacks they have and then compliment those attacks with the matching genes.

What letters?
Exactly. To get my armor to level 5 upgrade I need some kind of Recognition letter. I suppose I'll find those later.
You will. I had around seven of them late game. Needed them to upgrade my armor as well.
You can also get them from doing subquests at anytime in the game not just end game but only if the quest rewards say you get those from the quest

Many of my ice monsters have fire attacks so I can easily farm in the mountains without having to worry about frostbite. It's all about what works in my opinion. Besides, the genes can be replaced so I don't think you're in trouble there. It would just be some more gene farming.

@Bluie, Out of curiosity, is level 5 the highest armor rating? Also as a side note, I love your new avatar. :)

If you don't mind my asking, did you somehow give your ice monsters fire attacks or did they just have those by default? I've been getting really confused over what natural abilities a monster has verses those that they gain from genes, in addition to attacks as well.

Thanks!

There are more armor tiers once you get past the initial 5. The materials become more rare for upgrades after that. I think I stopped 2 levels past 5 as I realized I had no intention of doing too much postgame (going through my backlog orz).

@Leburns, I'm far from an expert myself. My Zamtrios had the warming gene (cold res), so I added a Yian Kut-Ku gene (fireball) in a spot where it was impossible to form a bingo. Though I wish I had an extra Blue Yian Kut-Ku so I could channel the blazeball ability instead. Still he's been a beast for mountain farming. It's really satisfying when he hurls a fireball at the sub-quest Zamtrios. Pretty sure that most ice monsters have warming as a fixed gene. Popo is the only one that has it as a natural skill that I've seen.

You may find this site helpful. There's also a section on monstie skills, genes, and egg patterns.

@Bluie, You're welcome! Thanks for answering, I was curious because I plan on some major post game shenanigans. :)

I think you mean a cooling gene, warming genes are on fire monsters usually.

^Names aside the ice monsters get the frostbite immunity from the gene. The only exception is Popo who develops it as one of it's skills.

Where can I find some Rathalos? I'm about 70 hours in game and have a quest to go find some egg in a tree, but I wanted to get my armor and weapon upgraded some more, but I need Rathalos loot.

The pedia in the game says they are in the plains in the starter area, but I keep searching and searching and can't find any. Does anyone know exactly where they spawn so I can at least know where to look? Thanks.

I can't believe how much I'm getting out of this game and I've never touched the MP or other stuff. I do grind a lot though but it's fun. Side quests do a good job of keeping me busy also. Two holding me up a while though.

One is to find the merchant son second time. First one I found in the town in the desert. The second one I can't seem to find anywhere.

The other quest holding me up is finding a heavy Leviathan egg. I can't even figure out where to find a Leviathan, let alone their eggs.

Both Rathalos and Azure Rathalos start spawning at the same time in the Pondry Hills area. The best place to find either is on the little island in the lake (where it will be asleep) or the shore closest to that island(where it is flying around).

The sub-quest where you have to find the merchant son in Oasum is finished once you find him and talk to his mother, the only way to see the other son is to go to the quest board and take the quest Troubled Sons (cont.) which swaps out the first son(who sells healing items) with the second son(who sells tools) this allows you to buy different items. You will know this quest is available when you finish the first quest and the mother says "They're taking turns tending the stall. The oddballs've put up a request on the Quest Board for swapping shifts!"

Leviathans include Royal Ludroth, Purple Ludroth, Lagiacrus and Ivory Lagiacrus. From where you say you're in the story you should have access to both Ludroths and after a certain point in the story (not far from where you are) you gain access to both Lagiacrus.

(Ivory Lagiacrus is very good and can be OP if you build it right especially in PvP.)

Thanks for that. I am on the second part of the quest (I selected it again), but I want to finish it just to get it off my list, but I can't find the second son as he's not at the village where the first one was.

85 hours and I FINAL beat the MQ. There's a lot of new locations and stuff added but I'm so burned out of playing I got to go play something else for a while.

Still a lot of unanswered questions though after the game. Like:
Spoiler:
What happened to the bad guys? They just ran off and that's it?
What happened to that other rider girl? Her part in the story was a lot smaller than I thought it would be. Course I haven't gone back to that town I left her at.
Man I need money. I can't even upgrade any armor. I'm milking the sub-quests but when you have 20+ armor and they all need upgraded it goes fast.
Need more recommendation letters.

^I don't know where they are.
That girl is still on that island and if you have already there is a quest you can get from her, also that fake rider guy also has a quest you can do.
