Well other than take care of them properly (which is a given) I don't know what else to tell you.....

Sell them when they get to about the age that they'll start to pass away?

It can't be prevented entirely, but if you take good care of them, they'll make it to the end of their natural lifespan. I believe that period of time is different for different species.

Yeah normally I'll sell my animals when they get too old so I don't have to deal with them dying. Still hurts a little but it's better than them dying on you; I can live under the blissful ignorance that maybe whoever bought them still has them alive lol

Iirc, the animal death cutscene only triggers if you enter the barn/coop on a day they're scheduled to die. So let's say you're fast-forwarding through a couple of seasons to see an event or something. No one comes to your house to inform you of the animal death, so all of your animals are technically still alive, until you enter their barn/coop. Same thing with old age, but you would need to save before sleeping every night, or every morning I guess.

Do herding pets herd animals that are set to die? Perhaps that might be a way to avoid their death, but you'd need to rely on sunny days for them to graze after the 7-day feeding bin period. If it was me, I would just sell them at that point.

I plan to breed mine and sell them before they die. I just can't with animal deaths, even in HM. No thank you. The worst was Animal Parade with the graveyard... cute idea in theory but I did not like it much.

The guide says a animals lifespan is about 8 years if you take good care of them. You should be good.
