We were talking about this game in here: http://fogu.com/hmforum/viewtopic.php?f ... 6#p5354953

But now that we have more official details on the game in development!

http://www.pcgamer.com/new-details-and- ... chool-rpg/
What are you prototyping in terms of game systems?

Finn Brice: There are many different kinds of magic/crafting/potion making/farming systems in this game and each of those needs to be rewarding and satisfying in their own right. This means prototyping many different, somewhat standalone, aspects of the game and tying them all together once we’re happy.

Expect to have a lot to do in the final game, but to progress regardless of the activity.
The idea of a school conjures up certain assumptions about the sort of stuff we might see in the game—lessons, relationships with classmates, the idea of a school year passing in terms of time. Are we along the right lines? Will we see some similarities to Stardew Valley in terms of systems or structure?

Rosie Ball: We are genuine fans and avid players of farming and village life simulation games, such as Stardew Valley and Rune Factory. With this project we are aiming to expand upon the genre, thematically and mechanically, taking it to places we are curious to experience ourselves.

A school operates very differently to a town. We’re working hard to include what we think are the essential elements of a school simulation while remaining within a familiar format that existing fans of the genre will be able to jump straight into.

It’s important to us that the game captures the nostalgia of school life as much as possible. Expect memorable moments drawn from our own experience that we think players will relate to. (Our team members went to school in different countries all over the world, so it is an eclectic experience we’re drawing from!) On top of that, we’re diving head first into the fantasy of what’s only possible in a magical school. It’s our personal take on the setting, and we hope to deliver something fresh and new.

The graphics (at least the character sprites) look a lot more polished, I'm excited to see what concerned ape does!

Pretty sure Concerned Ape (Eric Barone) isn't involved with this project. Chuckelfish just published SV, but seem to be taking a lot of aspects/lessons from SV.

That is my understanding, too...that this is Chucklefish's creation, not Eric Barone's. And it does look like a cute game worth checking out...I'll cross my fingers that it comes out on something other than (in addition to, I mean) PC.

I wonder if it'll kinda be similar to Magician's Quest on the DS.

A lot of people mix the developer/creator together with the publisher, Liliana93, it's no big deal. It's probably because often the developer and the publisher are the same; that's just a little less frequent with indie games, maybe. A lot of people thank Chucklefish for making Stardew Valley, too, lol, and they had nothing to do with the creation of the game...just the publishing. So maybe Eric Barone actually deserves a few mistaken thank yous for a game that Chucklefish actually is creating on their own, lol. :)

I like the more zoomed-out images as the pixels are less noticeable that way...it doesn't look too bad, and the colours are cute, at least in that one shot. I don't have a feel for this, yet, though. I'll look forward to a video.

It sounds cute, but um.... school kind of sucked? I really don't need nostalgia for that.

^School is a popular setting for video games and a lot of people hold nostalgia for their younger years.

I'm super nostalgic about my high school and college days. Yes, there were bullies and shithead teachers at times, but I also had a blast with my friends and learning about my craft was entertaining too (even if the exams were stressful).

It's an experience that varies from person to person, and there's a reason why we have so many games taking place in school settings. The Persona series isn't just popular for its dungeon crawling and story, but also the atmosphere of being in highschool and forging relationships with the people around you.

In Japan, high school is kinda seen as the Japanese person's glory days before they get swept into society. People like reliving or trying to re experience what they once had and bring on a sense of nostalgia. And while his game isn't Japanese, it's clearly inspired by many games before it coming from said country.
