FOMT & MFOMT, DS & Cute, AWL & ANWL... Back before the games let you pick your gender, did you buy both games? I recently read some Pokemon fan posts about how many people buy both games when the actual intended reaction is to buy one (and the third game) and trade between the two. HM obviously doesn't include trading, but the principal is similar.

As a kid, I admit I made my parents buy both AWL-ANWL and DS-Cute. I didn't see an issue back then. I played both games extensively and equally. I don't know how, but as a kid I didn't get bored of playing identical games. Nowadays, I'm more fickle with money so the idea seems pretty silly. I'd probably go with the female version since they have less glitches and I'm more into bachelors than bachelorettes... ANWL was my second HM game and admittedly I didn't know it was EXACTLY like AWL when I brought it, iirc. I simply saw the cover in a Gamespy ad and instantly wanted it. I have no regrets, especially since ANWL >>> AWL.

I have DS cute but I hated it. Don’t think I’ll get the boy version.

I never played AWL, so I wouldn’t know if I’d buy two versions of it.

AWL is my favorite Harvest Moon, hands down. I love how you can shape your kid's future. Normally, kids in Bokujou games are just kind of there.

Yes, yes and no but only owned AWL as a gift anyway and honestly wasn't aware for an embarrassingly long amount of time AnWL existed lol. Dying put me off it anyway and never finished.

At first, no. I only got the games specifically for my gender and my sister did the same. Then I found out I am gay and, after buying MFoMT, Boy and Girl, DS Cute and AnWL for myself, I found that I enjoy those games more. Granted, I started playing as a girl initially when ANB came out, but I wished I played the other games sooner to know that I enjoyed wooing the guys more than the girls.

i didn't at the time, mostly because i got into the series right before ioh came out. i did eventually buy both versions so i could compare them though. i tend to prefer the girl ones, since they usually have better translations, less glitches, and more (admittedly mostly cosmetic but cosmetics are fun) features

No, I never did buy both versions of one game. The only time I did was with HMDS. My copy of HMDSC corrupted after a month, and wouldn't read on my DS lite. At the time, my father and I went back to the GameStop to get a replacement, but HMDSC was sold out. So 8-10 years ago, I just got HMDS in the end instead. Funny thing is, the code on the cartridge tells me it's the most glitched version, yet I've still had no game breaking corruptions or errors yet *knocks on wood*.

I might actually consider looking for HMDSC during the holidays this year. With all the extra features, I've always wanted to play it. Though, preferably before my MFOMT cartridge expires it's save-battery.

I once bought AnWL used at gamestop, but later that day I learned that one of my little girl cousins had a GameCube, so I gave it to her before I even had a chance to play.

This year I bought DS Cute after years of having the regular version, mostly because I wanted to play DS with less bugs.

I did it all the time after my first game (AWL). So while I never bought FOMT I do have (had) MFOMT, ANWL, DS, DSC.

Now that I’m older I think that that was pretty « Cow Poopy » of Marvelous and I’m glad that they stopped doing it.

DS Cute was the only one I felt was a real sincere effort at adding new stuff other than “you can play as a girl.” Though DS Cute also had a better first impression out of the gate since it wasn’t riddled with bugs.

I only did it for AWL/AnWL. I would assume it was either because of money or just a lack of interest.

This was mostly a non-issue for EU players since they weren't released for us (including Magical Melody where you could only play as a boy, although I suppose it's not a true example as it had boy and girl in one game otherwise), but I did import MFoMT, DS Cute and AnWL since I feel more fulfilled playing as my own gender. Now they don't do that, my wallet is a lot happier for it. It's nice to see the devs/distributors recognising their player base better over the years, even if there's more room for growth still.

DS/DS Cute is probably the only game in the series where I bought both versions (when it came to the gender split, anyway). Surprisingly I played a lot more of the original version even though it's one of the buggiest games I've ever owned and I frequently had my plans and saves destroyed by stuff glitching out, lol. I wasn't even aware there were any HM games with the option to play as a girl until AnWL came out, and I was really not into the bachelors as a kid so I never played it.

I didn't follow the series all that closely until I was older and they stopped doing this, so I guess my parents' wallet dodged a bullet.

Yes, because I wanted to play the game Right Then, and I was annoyed that I had to wait for the version for my gender to come out. Plus, I liked the girls just as much as the guys, so it only bugged me a little bit. I like that they come packaged together these days, and I look forward to a day where there's less binary gender focus.

I definitely prefer to play as a girl, but that's never stopped me from purchasing a Harvest Moon title. Some of my best memories are actually from the male pc exclusive games - HM64, AWL:SE, DS, etc.

Unintentionally.

I bought AWL and MM without being able to buy/play the girl version and accidentally bought a FoMT copy, thinking it was MFoMT.
