I did for M/FoMT. MFoMT was a must buy for me when it was first announced because I loved FoMT/BTN and was so excited to play as a girl for the first time. From there I either didn't have the system for the game (no GC when AWL was released) or wasn't interested enough in getting the boy version (only bought DS Cute and skipped DS).

Oh yes, it is absolutely necessary for me to have both versions of each game. It's for both collecting and playing purposes. I need them all. The different marriage candidates are a good enough differences for me. I can fall for both bachelorettes and bachelors easily. It's still as exciting as playing a totally new game to me.
The only problem I've had was DS Cute not having the most attractive collection of bachelors. But hey, that's fine, some people like it. I just have no idea what to do with my 2nd file since Skye is the only one I care for that I can't already marry in AnWL. Had sorta the same issues with AnWL, but it didn't matter cause I have enough saves with my memory cards to have them all wether I like them or not. The girls were definitely more attractive for those particular games. Mineral Town did good at having attractive candidates in both.

Aww, that was so cute from your part! Hope she enjoyed it~

As for me I started with the girl versions right away, except with A Wonderful Life since it was a gift (and the girl version came later). I considered getting the girl version later, but I enjoyed wooing the bacherlottes and the experience also kind of remembered me to the older games (specially the original Harvest Moon for SNES), so I eventually just accepted my experience with it like that and I didn't get the girl version after all.

Not until much more recently in life. I started out with HM64 and was not aware of the other games at the time. I played it many times over and then discovered FoMT and AWL. Since the girl versions did not release at the same time I had no idea they even existed. The first time I got to play as a girl was IoH. When I discovered all these girl versions existed I wanted them, so I could woo all the guys I thought were so cute/interesting then. I bought the girl versions for everything except AWL. I have not finished that game to this day.

I like playing as both genders, so I usually ended up buying the girl versions too. I mainly play as a woman on the most recent games where you can choose, but I still prefer playing AWL and HM:DS compared to the girl versions. I think it's because I played those before I got to play the girl versions of them.

I bought DS Cute because the boy version was so glitchy. So then I bought MFoMT, and I'm still debating whether or not I want to play AnWL.
This was mostly a non-issue for EU players since they weren't released for us (including Magical Melody where you could only play as a boy, although I suppose it's not a true example as it had boy and girl in one game otherwise)
I still don't get why they removed Amanda from the Wii port.

We may never know...

That port is a mystery all around.

I always did, although now I would be more hesitant. I probably would do so simply because I own almost every game in the BokuMono series, but when I was a kid I didn't see any issue with getting both. I like playing as a girl because I am a girl, but usually I play as a guy because marriage is a big aspect for me and I wanna marry the girls. Nowadays I wouldn't really be a big fan of buying and playing the same game twice.

I've always wondered why they did the gender-split thing. In all three GB/C games, you could choose your gender, so clearly they had an idea that was a thing that would be wanted, right? I wonder if some of it was a programming thing because they gender-lock marriage candidates, but imo that wouldn't really make sense as an explanation for DS/Cute when they already had done it in MM. Then again I don't know anything about coding, so maybe it's harder than I realize. I wonder if part of it at first was wanting to test whether it would be worth the effort of having female protagonoists - if that wasn't a draw for many people, then it probably wouldn't make sense to bother writing heart events and whatnot for the male characters. Now I think the demographics are that female players are the majority, but I remember hearing that when the series was newer, there was an idea that only guys played video games. I wouldn't really know since I was 2 when HM:SNES came out.
