I'm sort of the same way with Owen. <.< *hides her "why I love Owen" soapbox* I could probably write a whole series of fanfics on that guy and the whole fan notion that he's nothing but a violent drunkard makes me mad. Grrr...

Anyway...

I find your preference refreshing, actually. I don't know of many Sanjay fans and (being a D&D fan) I love it when players find ways to flesh out characters and make them memorable. The way that most people depict Sanjay is as being without a will of his own or overly subservient. Your depiction humanizes him and gives him character. While he's not my cup of tea, it's changed the way that I will see his character from now on. :)

Kikki, you just reminded me how much I love Sanjay. He was absolutely my top choice in ANB and if I were to replay the game, I'm not sure I'd be able to pursue anyone else, and that's a rare thing for me. Usually marrying someone else is my reason for playing a new file in the first place. I very much agree with your assessment of his character and it was very fun to read. :)
He's so sweet. I also do really like his design, and the contrast between his light hair and dark skin. And I may or may not have a thing for the long hair and braid.

As for the topic as a whole, I'm not sure I could pin down my own preference patterns, since it seems to changed a lot. Of course, I've been playing the series since I was very little, so it makes sense. I may poke back in later to talk about that though! I've been procrastinating on some stuff but I kinda want to look into this more.

I had not actually heard that, before. Mostly I just hear that he's 'boring'. But I get it. Sanjay is not flashy in looks or personality; he's quite unassuming, and he enters the scene almost like an attaché rather than as his own man. Many people may have watched his and Amir's intro scene and immediately written him off as not worth paying attention to, and it's just a game, so there's no reason why they shouldn't, honestly. But I was fascinated. What HAPPENED between those two, that orphaned Sanjay came into contact with the prince and chose to dedicate his life to Amir? I wanted to know, so I paid a lot of attention to him.

Then I saw his purple heart event, and if I ever had any thought that he was subservient and without a will of his own (which I never did, but if I HAD), that event would have cleared it out immediately. Sanjay has a streak of helicopter mom in him! He's all sweet and accomodating when things are going as they should...if Amir and the MC are doing well...but the minute anything troubling comes up...boom. Out comes the scolding finger and furrowed brow of doom that showed me right away that Sanjay probably does more bossing than Amir, who never seems to demand anything of Sanjay at all but rather simply accepts him as a close and valued companion.

Well, everything about Sanjay just bent me right toward him, it seems. I won't dispute it with those who feel he's not interesting, because that's personal taste. All I can say for sure is that he was always interesting to me.

*****

And we're not very far off-topic here but to bring it more precisely back on...and to stop people from offering to pay me to stop talking about Sanjay...talking of this has made me see that even though he was a special case for me, he does actually fit a few more of my typical drawing points than I realized, in addition to his long hair. Those points would be:

~gentle or soft nature...not weak or wishy-washy, and not insecure, but placid, peaceful, or simply very mature in mannerisms. Not overly moody or prone to aggression. This is probably a big draw for me because this is somebody that makes me want to take care of them and do things for them.
~an introvert
~high contrast complexion (I love both dark skin with light hair and dark hair with light skin when it comes to looks.)

It's probably safe to say that I pretty much always fall hardest for candidates with the first two points, there. Even though I mean to play through 2 more files in addition to the 2 I have already done in Trio (Ludus and Yuzuki) I don't feel like anyone will manage to eclipse my fondness for Yuzuki. But it won't stop me from trying...you never know what interesting line will suddenly sweep your mind off to fun imaginings.

JUST CAUGHT MYSELF IN TIME EDIT: Ehppy...I tried to play ANB again and pursue Neil to experience something different...but I couldn't go through with it once we got to the point where I would normally have unlocked Amir and Sanjay if I'd been playing the usual way. I'd rather play my older file with nothing left to do on it where Sanjay is in my house and I can talk to him at any time :) And it's fun that you mention the high-contrast issue just as I'm writing it myself, too :)

I'm not really sure what my choices will say about my tastes and what not. I never really saw myself as having a particular taste.

Listen, all the Sanjay appreciation in the thread is great. He's my favorite bachelor for many of the reasons Kikki posted. :)

One thing that I really liked about ANB that I would like to see a return is traveling, actually. Gets a few more lines out of your spouse (and gives me the opportunity to spoil Sanjay the way he deserves to be spoiled).

I'm also coming to realize that 90% of the time I pick my spouse when they're revealed and see their little personality "blurb" on websites like this one :| Very rarely do I change my mind later...I think the only times was AWL (went after Celia first but after talking to Muffy, especially in AnWL, I changed my mind to go after Muffy) and the times I was on the fence in ANB for Soseki vs Sanjay (that changed very quickly to Sanjay when I unlocked him) and on the fence for Raeger and Nadi in SoS (but I had a feeling I'd end up preferring Nadi since Raeger is so BORING!).

Hm, let's see...

-Older men, i.e Griffin, Soseki, Klaus. Maturity is a great asset.

-Normal hair colours. It's not a dealbreaker, but I just don't find weird hair colours attractive at all - i.e purple, blue, green, etc.

-Guys who are initially shy, or act cold and aloof at first, but warm up to you and become very sweet as your relationship with them grows, i.e Gray, Gill. Or guys who are awkward, in an endearingly cute way. Or even somewhat silly and childish, but still capable of acting like adults when the situation calls for it.

-Girls who are cheerful and confident, but not spoiled or arrogant, at least after you've developed a close bond with them. And girls who are shy (but not depressing), and need a fair bit of persuasion to come out of their shells.

Oh yeah, bright lollipop colors are a great way to make me not choose a candidate, too.

Like, the only have exception so far has been Melanie... And that's because the only bachelorette without a weird hair color in Skytree Village is also the least interesting.

I also wooed the Oracle in ToTT, but mostly to get the scene with the name reveal.

I'm curious about this. Is this a blanket statement that applies to ANY candidate, or only if they are human? For example...if it were a mermaid with blue hair (I think Leia's was green or blue greenish), would that be more acceptable? Or a fairy with fire-orange or baby pink hair or...etc? Or would you prefer them with only the colours that are natural to humans, as well?

Oh right I did marry Leia in one file.

I do not like her lettuce-hair, but I wanted to marry a special character at least once... And she happens to be the easiest one.

I can look aside when the color could pass off as "cartoon natural", like orange or very dark blue/purple. But with baby blue, lime green, hot pink, etc. it's just like meh.

I guess it doesn't help that the "lollipop hair" trope usually comes tied to the "overly girly girl", "naive child adult" and "overly energetic" types, which I'm not particularly interested on.

When I was much younger I would always go for tsunderes, now that I'm older there doesn't seem to be any real pattern aside from avoiding... tsunderes

My favorites though are Joe from RF:ToD, Gustafa, Muffy, and Wayne

White hair + tan skin + pink/red/purple eyes= instant husbando/waifu.
Actually tan skin in general is a draw for me. Imo we don't see enough darker skinned candidates in anime style art and it's a shame because it's gorgeous. Short/messy hair is cute on both genders.

I have green hair irl so I don't mind colorful candidates.
