Mecha-Lollipop wrote:White hair + tan skin + pink/red/purple eyes= instant husbando/waifu.
Actually tan skin in general is a draw for me. Imo we don't see enough darker skinned candidates in anime style art and it's a shame because it's gorgeous. Short/messy hair is cute on both genders.
I have green hair irl so I don't mind colorful candidates.
I go for characters with dark skin too most of the time if they're an option, its sad that its still such a novelty in this day and age.

I do find it a little odd that the darker skinned marriage candidates have all had unnatural hair(+eyes in the last two games) colors during the 3DS era.
Kai and Denny could have regular hair and be ambiguously brown, and people liked them. So I wonder why do they feel the need to give them all the special anime treatment now.

In IoH I really wanted to marry Shae. As a native character I found him fascinating. FoMT I married Ann because she was all about the "dirty" talk, and it was such a big change for her from HM64. ToTT I married Dirk because he actually asked about me and my farm. I was originally going to marry Kana, but his horse obsession made me question his views on bestiality. In my first HM64 file I married Elli because the baker seemed way too old for her in my mind (in FoMT he's Karen's dad, so I can't help but feel I was right).
I'm not sure that any particular traits draw me to them. It's all very circumstantial, really.

There's a lot of qualities that can make my heart melt. First off, the looks and personality are both important, but I'm a little less picky about personality, so I usually look at a candidate's appearance before anything else. Also, some of my interests are opposites of each other. *shrug*
For guys:
-Long hair~ Hair is the most important thing when it comes to the looks. It's not mandatory though. The hair being in some sort of ponytail-ish thing is bonus.
-So feminine that they might be a crossdresser. ...Please, Marvelous, give me a crossdresser.
-Androgynous.
-When a guy is that special mix of manly yet feminine. Kana, Ludus, and Leon are this for me.
For Girls:
-Blonde or pink hair, along with purple in the RF world. Works with guys too, but it mostly occurs with girls.
-Lolita.
-Reminds me of a knight. Like, Iroha reminds me of Forte.
-Tomboys.
-Red dresses. Don't know why.
For Either:
-Tan skin. Particularly with the white or purple hair. Why does that work so well?
-Very pale skin.
-Glasses.
-Has suggestive dialog that makes you check the rating and wonder if that dialog is really okay.
-A bit of a total dipstick.
-Or, very serious and intelligent.
-A jerk. The kind of jerk that has that arrogant "I'm better than everyone" thing going on. Also the kind that never misses the chance to tease you. Very confident in themselves. I just find it so refreshing compared to all the goody-goodies and tsunderes.
-Kinda possessive.
-Or they could be nice, as long as they're not TOO nice.
-Might have a background story that makes me go "aww" or "oh honey", often out of pity.
-Likes chickens.
-Magical or special candidates are usually more appealing by default.
-Doctors.
I haven't married all of these due to lack of saves, but here's my favorites anyway.
Favorite Guys: Ludus, Yuzuki, Mistel, Nadi, Allen, Soseki, Amir (but I'd rather ship him with Sanjay), Kana, Harvest King, Wizard, JULIUS, Will, Vaughn, Elliot, Skye, Mason (the phone guy in DS Cute), Jin, Gill, Chase, Alex, Ray, Louis, Dan, Basil, Rick, Cliff.
Leon, Dylas, James.
There's a few more I've married that are okay-ish, as well as ones I love that I excluded to save space. Amazing that this is the short version, isn't it?
What I DON'T like:
-Super manly men with absolutely no feminine qualities, like Owen, Calvin, Griffin, Carter, and Bob.
-The cowboy/girl look. There's exceptions though.
-Facial hair. One exception.
-Michelle. Yes, she gets her own thing. I know I like pink hair and jerks, but she takes both of those things way too far. There's a limit, okay? Iluka pushes it too.
-Baby talk. Might as well give Maya her own thing.
-If you think I'm going to kill 50 animals out of love, you're insane.
-Abuse. The 64 version of Ann is awful to me because she gives Cliff a black eye. So I hold a grudge over all 2nd gen Ann's even though the Mineral Town ones are different.
-Well it's not particularly great when I'm able to forget that a character even exists.

I feel kinda bad...I didn't mean to make you sad. I just wanted to tease you a bit so that you would be a bit more talkative about your choice. I apologize, I just like reading what you have to say, because you have an artistic aura about you and a peculiar way of typing.
Oh, I see. :) Online, I usually take people's words seriously rather than as a joke unless it's very obvious. If you were just curious to know more, then I'm flattered by your interest, thank you. I would PM you an answer rather than inflicting it on everyone, but I cannot do so with a fishie since you have to have an account to be able to receive private messages. I'll try to explain a little more without being too lengthy about it or repeating too much of what I've said before. And I'll put it behind a spoiler so it's easy to skip.
Sanjay appeared in the game more at Amir's shoulder than boldly square in front of the camera...an orphan who, for reasons unexplained in the game, became the one person the prince relied on at all times. But even though Amir values him so much, Sanjay keeps himself back, as though he were a servant rather than the friend or brother he clearly is to Amir. Even if you go visit him every day, whenever you show up, he assumes you are there to see Amir, not him...as though he doesn't expect to be recognized as an individual at all. And even after you've assured him that you're there to see him, until you've lavished so much attention on him that he can't help but realize it's really him you're there for, he thinks you're just a really nice helpful person whose friendliness can assist him in supporting the prince, and he's happy about that...but he comes to like you for his own reasons, too, and even begins to stand at your shoulder as a lovingly concerned support. He's gentle and quiet and never puts himself forward but instead stays in the background to be the pillar of support that will hold everything up for you so that you are never burdened by too much weight, but he's quite stern, too, and won't take Amir or you risking or neglecting yourselves even a little...he'll tell you off promptly and force care on you and his best-friend prince if you don't care for yourself to his standards.
In my view, Sanjay is the most loyal, caring and selfless bachelor I've met. I love his dedication, and that if you befriend him, the devotion that made him dedicate his entire life to Amir slowly turns to you (without him losing his connection to Amir). I'm always intrigued by the type who put themselves...their wants and needs...behind others'. I like having my MC fussed over by him, and I love to have her take care of him in return, to be the one who puts him first.
His personality and his situation with Amir just wrote a novel in my head without me having to work at it...it just unfolded. It kept me very interested in him; I love him to bits, even though he's mostly fairly plain-looking and he doesn't have any outrageous or quirky lines like some others. I think about what it was like for he and Amir as kids, and what it would take to gain that level of regard, and how somehow, the MC manages to become as important to him as Amir...that you, as the MC, are the one 'selfish' thing Sanjay may ever do for himself. All that together is what makes it surprising for me when I hear that the general consensus is that Sanjay is boring...for myself, I've never met a more interesting guy. :)

Thank you for understanding, but I really shouldn't have made a butt out of myself. I should have just asked simply and show proper respect and manners to you. You don't bite or anything...I hope!
But I do have to say you really shouldn't have to hide your feelings away like that! I really liked what you wrote. You really do have a gentle character and an artistic aura about you. Ever considered writing? You really should! Never stop writing!

Off-topic reply:
Spoiler:
It's alright; don't worry about it. Tone is hard to convey over the internet...just stick in a few emojis or something and then I'll know you're teasing.
Thank you for the compliments. I don't mean to hide my feelings but a lot of folks here have already heard my opinions several times and I didn't want to subject them to it all again. And I do write, but the only fan-fiction I did was about ten years ago and in the Skip Beat! fandom, which I doubt is of interest. But I've been writing original fiction (for my own entertainment only; I have never shared anything except a short piece a friend asked me to contribute to an 'October Obsessions' challenge) for literally decades, as it's just plain fun to have a good stock of worlds you can drift off to if the real one is being difficult. I don't have any special talent and do have some very glaring weaknesses that I seem unable to resolve even though I can see them staring right at me. But it's just for fun, so I don't worry about that too much. Thank you
@Robinstar...a lot of your likes are mine, too. And I also can't get into a guy who is super macho/manly. I always want him to be in touch with his feminine side, I guess Though I do like seeing an occasional overtly muscular character like Leon. (It's funny that in the HM world, Ludus is considered buff. All he's got is a bit of a bump to his arms and shoulders and we're all amazed at how ripped he is, lol...just goes to show the arms-like-udon-noodles sort of physique our HM/SoS boys usually have. *I* am buffer than most of them, and I had to give up almost all of my athletic pursuits seven years ago!)
All in all, I'd just love to see a greater range in our candidates, both male and female. I prefer the newer games, but it seems to me like there was more variety in the candidates of older games. But since I didn't play most of them, that could just be because I'm not that familiar with what I'm talking about.

Yeah, I noticed we've got some very similar tastes. It's good not to be the only one. And, right, it depends on how long I stare at Ludus on if his muscles are super impressive or not to me.
I've played a lot of both the old and new games, and there was more variety at a point. Actually, it kinda went from mostly manly men, to mostly pretty boys. One would think I'd be happy with the abundance of beauty we get now, and I am, but I'd really like for there to be more candidates I don't like. 1) It saves me from having to give up on marrying certain characters when I run out of saves. 2) If the less attractive (to me) candidates outnumber what I like, then my choice will really outshine the others. Skye was super impressive in DS Cute cause of all the other guys I had to compare him to. Skye was the first of the really beautiful ones, and boy did he make an impact.
As for girls though, they've always been rather young and pretty. Even the "older" ones don't really look older. More variety in girl could really change things.

Me too...I love to have candidates that aren't to completely to my taste.
I know that sounds weird (though Robinstar must get it just fine, having said pretty much the same thing), maybe, but I also agree that the one you are drawn to seems all the more special if he/she's the ONLY one who draws you that hard, which was the case for me in ANB. And when ALL the candidates are likeable, they all feel more bland. In my experience, anyway. Everybody in Trio seems like a good catch. Some appeal to me a just a little more due to 'x' or 'y' feature, but they're basically all nice and cute. On one hand, it's great. On the other hand, it's kind of boring.
RF4 had very good candidates but they felt like they were fairly different from each other, so that was good, too.
A big range would be awesome. Can you imagine another game with TWELVE choices, like AP? I'd like thin ones, buff ones, chunky ones, scruffy ones, androgynous ones, ones with beards or goatees or thick glasses...the gamut, please. But that might actually decrease the game's popularity. In Japan at least...I suspect that in many other places of the world where things are less homogenous, more types are seen as attractive. I really just want to zoom in on that one perfect-for-me candidate and not be drawn in half a dozen directions, unable to decide which route looks better to me. But I don't think Marvelous would really be well served to be catering to my peculiar tastes, lol. You've got to appeal to the biggest market you can, not cater to the oddities.
EDIT: Added a poll on this topic because I did bring it up once before but I've forgotten who responded to it and I always find this really interesting. I chose the two bottom options because love at first sight with the perfect person is by far the best feeling for a single play-through...but I really like to play the games more than once, which makes me wish that one more candidate was good enough to forsake the first one for, in order to experience something fresh in the second play-through. I think it must also depend on how much you love to replay the game versus if you prefer to put everything into one play-through. I really wanted to replay ANB but I'll need to wait a few more years before there'll be anything fresh for me if I marry the same guy over again. And I just can't choose anyone else, there...no way.

There's definitely a couple of qualities in particular that appeal to me, but... even then, there are some kind of weird outliers, I feel? Let's see.
-HMSNES: Ann
-BTN/64: Karen. Had a thing for Cliff even back here.
-MFoMT: Cliff, far and away.
-HM:DS: Flora. Didn't play Cute, but only would've been interested in Cliff again, or possibly Skye, or just going for BFs with Flora.
-SoS: Raeger by a goddamn landslide, but also found Nadi pretty intriguing. Liked Iris on the gal side of things.
-RF4: Dylas by far, though Leon was neat, too. Ladies-wise, I liked Margaret and Forte (but never played a Lest file to romance 'em).
-SoS:ToT: Hinata, with some interest in Ludus, and I liked Yuzuki's design. Fave gals are Iluka and Kasumi.
With gals, it seems easier! It looks like I like the strong-willed, the confident, the mature, and/or the tomboyish ones. For the dudes, hrm. ...I can't actually think of a single thing that ties all of them together.
Points in general, I suppose, go to folks who are chefs or decent cooks, certain types of tsundere, long-ish hair, defined life goals, and a warm personality (even if it's buried under several layers - looking at you, Dylas). A really cute blushing portrait also helps, hahah.

I typically go for the super tsun guys that people get annoyed with if I'm playing as a girl. Gray, Vaughn, Chase, Neil, etc. They're probably the ones I marry the most. Every once in a while, a girl will catch my attention a lot and I'll fall in love with them just from appearance and description, so I'll play as a guy just to marry them. Gwen and Iris come to mind first regarding this. The only time I haven't gone for either one of those types is in this newest game where I married Ludus instead. The game didn't really have a jerky 'slow to warm' guy and none of the girls really wow'd me right away, so I went for him instead. Don't regret the decision since I like him a lot but he's just my statistical outlier.

I've married: Marlin, Kai, Gray, Will, Denny, Luke, Gill, Owen, Ivan, Ash, Dirk, Neil, Fritz, Ludus, and am almost done wooing Wayne
Girls: Every girl in Sunshine Islands and Daisy
I don't really think I have a definable taste, especially for guys haha. I just married whoever I thought was cute. Out of the guys I've married, my favorites would probably be Gill, Owen, and Ludus, with Dirk, Kai, and Wayne as honorable mentions. I felt like all these guys were pretty romantic after marriage so maybe that's my thing? Who knows!

Taste, huh? 8/a
For guys I like the steady and mature sort as partners. I admit they should look attractive XD And I definitely like longer hair in most cases mostly because I think long hair is fun to play with. I'll also sometimes go for the ones who seem like they're loners or solitary, because that's a thing I totally understand. Sometimes I'll marry everyone, just to see who's personality appeal the most, but more often than not I'll pick one or two and just chase them.
Girls, I like optimism. Popuri from HM64 was the first I actually married (Though later Karen became my favorite just because she needed a rescue, I admit). Friendly, cheerful, and sassy but not mean.I actually like the odd hair colors XD

For bachelorettes, I used to go for the quiet, redheaded kuudere types in both HM/RF. I say used to, because in the later installments I've played (SoS Trio and RF4) I've really gone for Lisette and Meg, sooo - sweethearts? Which may be because of a lack of redheaded kuuderes, or my personal tastes are becoming more relevant to the fictional bachelorettes I like.
As for bachelors I'm not really sure? I like working to get to know them and uncovering their real personality or at least a different aspect of them. I've really liked Gil, Dylas, and Ford. I guess you could jot me down for the jerks-turned-sweethearts. *shrugs*

Tbh my taste is kinda mixed
My first husbando is Cliff, because I love how he try to be independent, and how sad his past, I just have an urge want to protect him
And then Skye, idk... Most of the DS:Cute/AnWL cast didn't attract me so much, Skye is the most interesting one as a thief lmao
Move forward, Vaughn, I literally madly in love with tsundere back then, and his love to animals is such a plus point for me
In GrB I just somehow i love Ivan because he is so gentle, and kind, also he is a teacher, at first I'm attracted to Lloyd but idk, he kinds turn me off for no reasons
Then in ToTT instantly fall in love with Cam, because his soft tsundere, and his love toward cat (I'm a cat person too)
In AP I just instantly fall in love with Wizard+Chase+Gill, I know it's unfair for loving three of them lol, but I love them equally
In ANB, ofc its Neil, a tsundere+love animals like Vaughn.
After that I'm not really interested in tsundere/cool type anymore I prefer someone gentle, and mature.
Here I am choosing Raeger in SoS, and Yuzuki in ToT
I just realized how my taste is so inconsistent through the year lol

Interesting thread!I don't really have a specific taste in candidate characters. It always changes.
For bachelorettes,I usually choose the tomboyish and cheerful types like Ann.But I also really like the feminine and caring types like Elli,Ellen,or Lisette.I really love the shy girls like Mary too!
For bachelors,I really love the quiet, mature, and gentle types such as Yuzuki or Ivan.Although I'll sometimes go for the loud and optimistic and dorky types such as Fritz or Luke.I also really like red haired guys too for some reason.I guess some of us don't really have a consistent taste and go for whoever interests the most.
