Was just wondering about this. Also, was there anything notable or important cut from any of the Harvest Moon games?

'Harvest Moon for Girl' (ie, the distaff counterpart version of back to nature) was never localized on it's own, though we did get the psp port that included both. we also never got an official english translation for minna de bokumono, the farmville-esque browser game

as for things being taken out, the only thing i can think of that was in any way noteworthy was the best friends system from ds cute. from what i understand, in the japanese version there was some kinda glitch or other, and to cover it up, you were able to ask one the special bachelorettes to be your gal pal and they'd come live in your house and the harvest king would give you a magic baby. natsume left in all the heart events for them, but made it so they'd never accept the blue feather if you proposed

For in depth info on every Harvest Moon game on what changed and what was cut.

It's missing Magical Melody and the other Wii titles (and most of the DS games), but it's still pretty informative.

Anyone on Fogu edit TCRF? I feel it could use more info on HM development. I'll need to join the Wiki some day.

Censorship wise or development wise?

Censorship wise, there's of course the Best Friend system from Cute where you could 'best friend' (marry) the Special Bachelorettes.
I don't know about the early games because it's hard to find info on the Japanese versions, however I know Natsume censored some other stuff. In DS/Cute, Muumuu's parents tried to arrange a marriage for but Muffy's tried to get her on a blind date (weird thing to censor since Celia had an arranged marriage in AWL). In Japan, iirc, Gill had a line about wanting to lock you in his basement that was removed for the English releases of AP. I know one rival scene between Julius and Candance had him wonder if she thought he was a crossdresser in JPN, changed to him wondering if she thought he was short in English. In AWL, Hugh is 6 in JPN but 8 internationally and in AWL:SE Lumina is 16 in JPN and 18 internationally (all while still using her 14 year old model...).

Developmental wise? I only know about AWL. Ranch Story has some beta screencaps on its site. I know the unused shed was once a horse shed, the dog was originally useful (herded animals and could be taught tricks), the circus from DS was originally for AWL, and the animals had more animations and appeared walking around town more.

There were two versions of Magical Melody - the original and the For World version. The original version had a game-breaking bug in it that would prevent game progress if you hit it(I even had to restart my game because of it). MMV later released a For World version where Jaime was a marriage candidate, and that's the version localized by Natsume for the other regions.

Japan didn't get the Wii version of Magical Melody, and they're just now getting the 3DS version of Tale of Two Towns. There was also plans to bring over Frantic Farming to Japan, but it was never released. Since the split, Japan hasn't received any of the new "Harvest Moon" series even though they've been released elsewhere in the world.

Censorship-wise, there was an event in A New Beginning where the adult women talked about their breast size, which was changed to them talking about their hair in the EN version; I doubt Nintendo would of allowed that to pass through. The dialog where Rebecca talks about how drinking milk is good for her chest size snuck past, probably because it was one line that triggers after you win the cow festival.

There's also the graphic changes to the Hispanic shopkeeper triplets in the EN version - in the Japanese version they have large noses and buckteeth.

Yeah, what others said... English localisations removed all references to same « Chicken Hugging » relationships. That always upset me immensely, Natsume's homophobia is just disgusting.

I'm not excusing their actions and it always annoyes me that I couldn't BFF Leia, but times were different back in 2006. Many companies would have done the same. It's only within the last 6 years that people in many countries have gotten more comfortable with explicit same-gender couples in family-friendly works.

....'Still waiting for Story of Seasons to allow gay marriage again though.

Censorship wise again, the EU versions of HMDS had all of the sprite casino nerfed. Gambling isn't allowed in E games. So they took out all the games bar the card matching.
Most recently, the request for Wine in SS.ToT was changed to Lemons.
