- Prince charming/flirty types
- The cute & sweet girl next door type, often lives on a farm
- Special candidates that don't live with you or are gone most of the time
- Characters like Will, I can't even recall anyone else in the series who acts like him but it was super unappealing to me lol

In theory, I'd love to have older marriage candidates, but it would be great if they stopped treating the MC like a child. It makes the dynamics of the relationship pretty uncomfortable for me. I have a soft spot for Klaus but even he had plenty of moments that bothered me :/

There are some archetypes that I'm usually not into, like candidates that look/act younger, but there always ends up being a few exceptions for me.

The original plan was to have Murray and Daryl, but they figured that along with Carter and Marlin, it was too many black haired men.

-Arrogant ones that don't get better (*Stares pointedly at ANB Allen*)
-As mentioned by others, the younger looking candidates, or the older ones who constantly fuss about their age.
-The ones that don't live with you (You might be cute, but I want someone I can cuddle and don't have to jump through hoops to be with.)
-Super Flirts. (I know they're not actually, but it BUGS me.)

This topic has been a fun read. :)
I think the major issues for me are...

The Flirt - Just doesn't do it for me. I don't think I've ever gone for one of the flirty types. Even in Wayne's case where he's supposed to actually just be a real nice dude who likes women to be happy and feel good about themselves and all that, it feels disingenuous to me? No shade at Wayne fans of course, and I do appreciate how he has a character outside of the flirting, like his interest in astrology and all that.
I guess they feel sort of impersonal to me.

Possessive types - Man was I disappointed when I met Allen in ANB. I thought he was so cute but the way he acts towards the MC kinda creeps me out. It's fine if people like that, and it's harmless and everyone interprets dialogue in different ways, but it makes me a tad uncomfortable. Unfortunately some of Hinata's lines in Trio have a bit of that feeling to them as well, which ended up being the reason I didn't go after him, because I really enjoyed his character otherwise.

The "I'm so much older/younger than you" - I prefer leaving things a little ambiguous in games like these because a lot of people like to put themselves in the place of the MC, myself included most of the time. I can pretend my character is whatever age I want to, but with characters like Klaus and Soseki it's pretty impossible to do that. Besides the fact that, like some have already mentioned here, they're probably somewhere in their mid thirties talking like they're 70 or something? I get that maybe they just feel old by comparison/are insecure about the age gap, but it starts to become their whole character and I am not about that. Especially sad because Klaus was my second favorite in SoS.

Those are the main ones, anyway.

Huh. This is hard for me, since I'm usually pretty easy-going and open with all my choices.

-The no-character-development tsundere. It's a stretch, but I didn't find the appeal in Neil, Vaughn, or Iluka because of how extremely "don't talk to me" they were. I just do as I'm told. If they don't want me to talk to them, then I guess I won't talk to them.

-The shy types. I'm pretty extroverted in real life, so I get a little annoyed with shy characters. I don't know...I guess I'm just a person who likes to be in the spotlight. As a result, the hide-in-the-shadows shy candidates are a no-go for me. Especially if their dialogue pattern has them stuttering from fear of talking to others.

-It's hard to explain...but the type that's terrified of love/affection? Basically, Lillie from SOS, and how she would freak out over every little thing involving love with the Male MC. The poor girl hyperventilates from holding hands; that's a little much if you ask me.

-The ones that can't cook for « Cow Poopoo ». Sorry for sounding rude, but if a candidate goes to make mixed juice, and they end up cooking burnt charcoal hockey pucks instead, then something fishy is going on in their brains, lol.

-Older character: Kllause for a example. I get it your old. Geez stop reminding me.
-special magical characters: just not my thing. Other people can’t see them, it’s like your married but again you’re not. Feels lonely to me.
-Jerks: People like Neil are basically dead to me. Why should I befriend someone who’s going to be a pain in the butt.
-people who’s always serious about something: Mostly just doctors like Ford. Like why.

-Tsunderes, mostly out of principle since I really don't like the "be nice to someone who treats you horribly long enough and they'll eventually treat you like a human being" sentiment being peddled to the kids these games are aimed at.
-Possessive characters, for the same reason
-Overly stern guys or shy girls (when its switched I don't mind as much), just because I think its cliche and lazy writing
-Unnatural hair colors

Weirdly, the person I hated the most out of all of the HM/SoS/RF games was Sierra from RF:ToD, who doesn't fall into any of these categories...
I hated Elena too... And Maerwen and Pandora... and definitely James... There were a lot of « Cow Poopoo » characters in ToD.
Maybe that's why I love Joe so much, because everyone else is so « Cow Poopy » in comparison.

* Rude and/or possessive characters. I guess some people like that and it is fiction, but I don't want to marry someone who treats me like barn dirt or makes me feel like a possession. I don't mind characters who are a little tsundere at first as long as they warm up, though I can definitely understand what's been said about the unfortunate implications.
* The very shy ones usually. I don't dislike them and I do like to befriend them. It's just that they remind me too much of myself, so marrying them would feel weird.
* The tomboys. That's a perfectly valid trope. I just have no interest in marrying them, because my personal preference is for cute girls lol.
* The kind of "perfect housewife" type. Celia is the one who immediately comes to mind. I don't tend to find them as interesting.

Well, Sierra SCREAMS when you talk to her since the game has voice acting, and I'm really sensitive to loud noises so every time I talked to her I wanted to slap her across the face lol. Other than that she's extremely selfish and lazy, her brother practically has to beg her to work in their store and even when she does work she acts put out that you're even there buying things from her.

Elena is also selfish and bratty, and I know that this is small but she apparently doesn't remember your name if you don't talk to her for a couple days. Is that supposed to be charming or something? I get that she's mechanically-minded and all but did they really have to make her so inconsiderate?

Maerwen is just a generic tsundere, also why is every dark skinned character (with ONE exception) a maid in RF games?

Pandora is just... unpleasant. Who likes these characters who go out of their way to treat you like « Cow Poopoo »? I don't get it.

And James, « Harvest Goddess » James. First of all he just has this gentlemanly vibe about him that I am not buying. Those characters just seem so insincere to me. Second of all he's supposed to be this worldly and mature guy but he has the nerve to say something along the lines of "girls should be the ones to cook/clean" in regards to his sister, which, what a lovely thing to say about your sister who clearly has no interest any either of those things, I get that she walks all over you but geez. People give Joe « Cow Poopoo » for the "Don't hurt your pretty face" line but this is so much worse in my eyes, probably because I was raised to be warier of "educated" people with ignorant opinions than of "uneducated" people with the same opinions (plus Joe never says ANYTHING about what's "for women" or any « Male Cow Poopoo » like that). Also I don't remember if he says this if Sonya and the male MC are together or just to Sonya but either way, seriously? Are you dense or just totally comfortable being sexist? Get « Snuggly Bunny ».

The male MC is kind of an « Mr.Gourmet's hat » too, he tells Kasey to "man up" at least once which really rubbed me the wrong way, and doesn't really seem to care about Sonya's feelings even though they share the same body since he walks into the tunnel despite Sonya clearly telling him not to.

The rest of the candidates are fine, Joe, Mikoto, Odette and Lilly are my favorites out of the bunch

I have ones that are similar a lot of other people,
Characters that are too old and characters that are too young (After Inari never appeared more adult after marriage I couldn't continue to think of them as anything but a child (I have a soft spot for special bachelors/ettes), I had a thing for mistel when I was younger but have grown out of that)
Tsundere's (Male/Female) that have no progression
Flirts, Julius is the only exception to this rule
Really shy characters like Mary, Cadence? (the one from TOT)
The innocent easy-to-get flower loving female tropes (Lillie (TOT), Shara (RF3), Mana (RF2), etc) my personal dislike cause they felt forced or just unrealistically innocent
Doug (from RF4) and Allen are two I particularly dislike.
Every bachelor from harvest moon DS cute

Those are the ones that I can think of

There's not too many total no-gos for marriage candidates in my book, but I am stubborn about the ones that I have. My main one would be most tsunderes, or at least the static, one-dimensional ones. For example, Vaughn, Iluka, and Allen are the sorts of characters I would usually ignore, but others such as 64!Gray might get a light pass for having a reason for that kind of behavior. Being slow to warm to the player is fine (like Gwen), but there's a difference between being polite but distant and a grump.

On the other side of the coin, I tend to pass over the flirty types, especially if they are bachelors. Wayne and Will are way too overt for me, but Julius and Muffy are good. To give you an idea, I think the furthest in this direction I would go is Hinata's introductory scene. That was the perfect balance IMO.

Also, there are a few factors that tend to discourage me from wooing characters, but that I have no hard rules about not going for. Those include the older bachelors (especially if they are insecure about being older), and any candidate that is too much like a past one without a real reason for it. While I don't dislike Sabrina, she is the first example of this that came to mind.

Vaughn is an orphan who was abandoned how is that not a good reason to not trust people easily lol

Rock or anything resembling him. (Wayne is pretty OK though) Oh and older or younger characters. The typical farm girl bores me too like Ellen and Renee. (Although Celia is an exception.)

I only now remembered that because I always ignored Vaughn. I still think that only gives him a little justification, though, making him slightly better as a character compared to some others. Mostly, I just dislike the trope.
