This has bugged me forever. It seems like no matter what I do, by the second in-game year my horse is barely responsive. Talk or pet him and all he does is make a noise. Is that a pre-programmed thing or does it happen if you don't take care of your horse right? I always found it annoying how the horse rarely reacts after he grows up. My sheep follow me around like dogs yet my horse barely notices me.
I think it's a glitch that happens in the game. I remember reading something about how your horse's "neigh" can become glitched to just playing a default sound whenever you interact with it, along with a lack of animations. I can't remember what triggers that annoying bug though...
Happens to me all the time. My horse will be all when I first get it, but I'll have one instance where I'll make it mad and it'll just snort at me until my character is in the grave. Doesn't really matter since he doesn't have a health meter so being mad won't make him sick but I'd like a positive response when caring for animals. Oh well, at least he still likes being brushed.
I noticed that it's easier to keep the horse happy in AnWL. But in AWL, yeah, it's unresponsive in no time. I have experiment with it a little bit though. It seems that sometimes if you absolutely shower that creature with attention, you can get a happy response for like... a day.
I actually kind of like the sound of footsteps in this game.
Though I like how the horse sounds too... You can make it advance slowly while it moves its hooves super fast and it makes a funny tapatapatapatpat sound.
