Stardew Valley for a disabled gamer

Should I get the PC version or the Nintendo Switch version? I have mild cerebral palsy on my right side, affecting my right hand, and I would like to make sure I can play either version of this game before buying one. What are the general controls for the PC and Switch versions? Do you need both hands? I love the Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons games and would love to play this game too.

Depends on what you feel more comfortable with.

On the switch you have regular buttons and a control stick. On PC you'll have to use keyboard keys and a mouse both at the same time.

Some people may find it easier to use one or the other

The one thing I could see maybe being an issue are the fishing controls. A lot of people have trouble with them, but there have been people that have modded the game to either make it way easier or taking out the fishing minigame entirely. Being able to mod the game (which people have already created mods for, you typically just have to drop the files in a folder) is a pretty big boon for the PC version imo!

Easier fishing - https://www.nexusmods.com/stardewvalley/mods/1114/?
Has a toggle to implement instant fishing, one hit kills for mobs, etc https://www.nexusmods.com/stardewvalley/mods/4/?

You can also use a controller on the PC version if you are so inclined. :) Hope you have fun with the game if you end up picking it up!

If you end up picking it up on Steam, they have a pretty good refund policy too. As long as you don't play more than 3 hours and refund it within the first 15 days, so if you pick it up on there and decide it isn't for you, you can get your money back pretty easily.

Thanks, but I'm not sure since I'm getting a Nintendo Switch for Christmas.

I found Stardew Valley on PC unbearable, specifically because of the controls. So awkward to have to use the mouse and the WASD letter keys all the time, often in concert. It's BETTER on PC, imo, because of the mods, but I couldn't stand playing it that way, so for me the Switch worked out better even though it would have been great to be able to use the mods. I have very long fingers, though, and using the keyboard cramps them up while a controller allows me to fold them around a comfortable hold, so I'm very biased there. I've always found I experience a lot more hand/arm/shoulder/neck pain when PC gaming, so yeah. I never end up voting for it, lol.

You can reassign the keys you use for controls on the keyboard, though, if some are more comfortable than others.

You can use a controller with the PC version, too, but last I checked, the controller support was only partial, so you'd still need to use the keyboard as well, though I think that was updated. You can check the control layout of the PC version here. (The Switch version is there too, actually.)

I've never gotten the pc game to recognize any of my controllers. And yeah making the mouse absolutely mandatory when playing with a keyboard is just... Annoying.

I have a Dualshock 4 but haven't tried it. I have tried the Xbox controller, though, and it works. Not in a way I liked, but I think it worked the way it was supposed to. One of those diagrams appears to be for the same controller I have.

I have tried using regular android controllers, which work properly with many other PC games, with no success.

I think it only supports the two controllers mentioned...Xbox One/360, and PS4 (Dualshock 4). I have both, but haven't tried the latter with Stardew. THIS thread has lots of discussion from people using controllers with the game.

And I assume since it is a game on Steam, it will also work with a Steam controller, but I don't know.

Well those are expensive so I won't be buying them for one game.

But it's cool for people with the consoles I guess.

I have a PS4, hence the controller, but I don't own an Xbox. The controller was pretty inexpensive...I got mine for $27 CAD and it's the most commonly supported controller with Steam games (well, other than the Steam controller itself, most likely), so I figured, why not? The Steam controller, however, is quite expensive. I looked at it, but...not at that price.

Thanks so much for your input, everyone. I think I'll be getting Stardew Valley on the Switch anyway, and, if I do, update here with what I think the game feels like for me (in response to the controls).

What's the mouse used for in the PC version of Stardew Valley? :?:

It seems to be pretty irreplaceable in placing objects, like buildings or storage chests, etc. Placing objects seems to be the most difficult thing to do with a controller...most people continue to use their mouse for it even if they use a controller for everything else. On switch there is an option in the game menu to turn off...I can't remember how they word it. But it lets you place objects more smoothly, the way you would with a mouse.

EDIT: Okay, checked. To place objects smoothly on the Switch you just have to go into the menu and turn OFF (uncheck) the box that says 'use controller style menus'. Then you can place objects more smoothly, like using a mouse.

When playing with the keyboard you can do almost everything easily without the mouse. Navigating menus and placing objects down is impossible though.

The most inexplicable thing is that you absolutely MUST use the mouse to advance the text boxes when interacting with the NPCs. Pressing the action button you have assigned on the keyboard? That's too mainstream.
