Deciding your kids career in AWL is impossible

Even with guides, it doesn't seem to work. I've never been able to get my son on anything but the default careers. I'm thinking of replaying ANWL (simply because it's much shorter than AWL) and trying again for kicks, but it seems futile.
Anyone else have trouble with that? Years of owning both AWL and ANWL yet this has always stumped me. That and how to get good vegetables.

I know it's possible to get all the careers in the original GameCube version because you have more time to sway your child in Ch 2 and 3. Not many people make it to the end of 10 years though since they run out of things to do and simply get bored.
In AnWL its nearly impossible to get anything other than the kid's default career or at least their 2nd best career. I've tried countless times but it's always a race against their default interest which raises faster after each Chapter. You have a better chance with careers that have a lot of repetitive actions that take up all day (like watering individual crop squares or digging at Carter's dig site). I still want to test more things out though like if cutting grass all day would assist in ranching or what would happen if I simply stood in Romana's Mansion all day before declaring a certain career is impossible to get.

Who your spouse is is also a factor. Their child will be easier to sway into some careers, and much harder to sway into others. For example, Muffy's child will be easier to sway into being an artist or athlete, and very hard to sway into being a scholar or farmer.

It really feels impossible. I quit one playthrough because of it. And in AWL it really does get boring fast in Chapter 2 and 3

I'm sure it's not totally impossible, but probably takes a ridiculous amount of dedication.
Luckily for me, so far I've just happened to choose one of the more likely careers for mine. ...So far. I wanted Muffy's to be an artist, but I got a bit worried towards the end cause he still kept showing a lot of interest in sports and stuff. But I got what I wanted.
Then Celia's, well there's really no doubt I'll be able to get ranching or farming out of him, but I'm not to the end yet.
Nami's... Things keep happening that cause me to have to restart that file. But I want a musician kid even though he's supposed to have a very low interest in it. That'll be a nice test.
I also have SE, but since I want Nami's to like music, I'm not sure what to do with Lumina's. I tend to put off playing that version after being spoiled by GameCube.
Then my kid with Rock in AnWL is hopefully going to be an athlete, which you'd think would take no effort, but another interest was catching up last time I checked. Probably art. Been awhile.
Maybe I'll pick more difficult things for Gustafa's and Marlin's just for the heck of it.
Even if you pick something easy, it's like the game wants to see you struggle.

It's also good to note the special cutscenes in your child's room in chapter 3:
The Dead Stick, when answering positively to it, will give a massive boost to art strength. Muffy and Rock's son will get this.
The Wooden Box, when answering positively, will give massive boost to scholar strength. Celia, Nami, Marlin, and Gustafa's son will get this.

I don't know honestly... I wanted Lumina's kid to be a Rancher and it seemed to work really well in my game. I never finished because school got in the way but I don't see how he could end up being anything else at this point, the cutscenes are now related to ranching, and his interests and skills are high in animals (even as a teen). I'll play again once school is over.

Yeah your spouse has a ton to do with it. I remember playing this game as a kid and married Nami and my child showed a lot of interest into becoming an artist and likely would have been if I kept playing, even though I didn't really talk to Cody much or do much else to persuade him in that direction.
Same thing happened when I married Celia. Barely tried to steer his direction and was on his way to becoming a rancher I think.
Granted this is from years ago and my first HM so my experience was not the most insightful but I do remember trying to persuade Nami's child to becoming a farmer somehow or anyway I thought I could and it did nothing

I wanted to replay the game for the first time in 6+ years. I made the mistake of befriending everyone, getting all the buildings, and getting the seed makers by the end of Ch 2... I couldn't make it through the first year of Ch 3. There was nothing to do. I was rich and everything was s easy.
I wish the original game was streamlined like ANWL and SE. SE is nice but super laggy.
