I've been debating getting the game but I have no idea what it's like. Would anyone here be able to tell me:
1. What the gameplay/combat is like?
2. Is it easy to get the hang of?
3. Do battles require a lot of strategy or can I just spam attacks/magic?
4. Without spoiling the story, can you give me a short plot summary? (If not that's fine)

U get 4 teammates and you all start with same generic class.
You beat up bosses and take their classes and can change the 4 teammates into any of the classes you've obtained.
Each class has weaknesses/unique skills, the latter which you obtained as you level in the individual classes and can mix/match with other classes to provide unique combat experiences.
Its fun, a bit of a learning curve but once you got it your good. Plus there are difficulty modes, I believe. Easier modes don't require too much strategy but it may be grindy, if i remember right.

The story starts with a simple 'purify the 4 elemental crystals' like various early FF games, and it continues and expands from there. Anything else would be spoilery. You can achieve different endings depending on your actions too.

1. The combat is like if you've played Pokemon, having a turn based system. When assigning individual actions you can attack, defend, use magic or items. The game-play runs well; isn't rushing you since you can do side-stories apart from the main-story that provides more background in characters and personalities.
2. The game gives it's basic instructions as it should; and leaves plenty of room for strategy experimentation by fighting standard enemies. You can also adjust enemy frequency from seeing them non-stop, to never encountering.
3. You should be able to get by spamming, but it is good in this game to have some sort of back-up strategy on hand. Some bosses get incredibly difficult just by using a spamming tactic alone. The game allows for hardcore strategy and (somewhat) casual players. I do recommend taking every opportunity to gain levels though. (Mostly through side-stories and quests then just grinding.)
4. The game is pretty much all story-line.

You can't exactly get endings from actions. True, but not entirely. You beat the game, get the standard ending, then have to go back after beating it to find the real ending. It's not like Undertale in the regard of multiple ending determined by overall gameplay. Only end-of-game play.
