Rune Factory 5 Official Discussion Thread v1
(@PaleSunflower)
I have a theory on why they didn't put barrier-free marriage options into RF5 from the start, and why Marvelous (not Hakama or any other name or specified person beyond 'the producer at Marvelous'...is that Hashimoto, or not? Is he still 'a producer at Marvelous' now that he's the head of Hakama? But if they meant him, why didn't they just use his name, when we're all familiar with it?) was stated as someone who agreed they needed to go in. If my theory were correct, it would also be more beneficial (for Marv/Hakama) for Xseed to say things happened as they did than to be any more specific than they were. Could the poll be the reason why, or at least one of the reasons, or the final deciding reason, that convinced Marvelous Japan? Definitely, it could. We all voted in that, too (a lot of us, anyway...I know I did) both here and in other quarters of the internet, because we believed it might help, that they might listen to the results. I hope the poll DID change their minds.
However my idea of why they didn't add it in from the beginning, and why it got added after with the explanation Xseed gave, is just that: a theory. I don't have and will never have the kind of insider info that would be needed to confirm or deny that theory, so I've never brought it up. Rumours and theories can get spread over the internet as though they were factual and I don't want to risk starting anything like that. (Particularly since my theory is rather unpleasant.) I'm happy enough to just go with what Xseed said when they announced same-« Chicken Hugging » marriage options: that Marvelous added the option "After months of drafting and review, in August 2020 we submitted a proposal to Marvelous regarding same-« Chicken Hugging » marriage implementation."
They also say that the creative team was looking into adding it at the same time and confirmed their interest in late september. That may refer to the poll. (I don't know, of course.) They're pretty detailed about how it came to be in their localization blog, but no names are brought up, and other specifics I wanted to know were left out. Those details weren't included...but I'm okay with that. Particularly if my theory is correct. I don't want to poke at it.

I've been seeing some comments on people being worried about the lack of hype on this game. I do understand the worry. I hope Marvelous/X Seed will do a little more promotion. Honestly though I think the game will do pretty well (knock on wood) since people really like these kind of games. No doubt a Steam version will also come down the line.
For me personally, I'm pretty excited for the game. I've never been a huge Rune Factory fan, instead preferring Story of Seasons/Harvest Moon. Still, the games are pretty good and in my life time i have gotten all of them. I will say though that the addition of SSM has made me more excited. Like others though I'm worried about the story and character interactions. The later of course for me is a very important thing when it comes to farming games. Characters and their interactions are really important.
Overall though I am excited but also wary of the game. I'm hoping it sells well though and we get another farming game soon.

I hope that the game gets a bit more promotion as well. It is kind of weird that X-Seed hasn't posted a 3rd localization blog post to help hype up the game. The last one was in September of last year. Not to mention that the official website is still incomplete, as Kikki mentioned in a previous post. I don't think that RF5 is getting advertised much either, outside of social media.
(As for the voice actors, I have no strong opinions on the English voice cast. Though, after going through X-Seeds 2nd localization blog again, I was not expecting Lucas to be French.)

Weirdly, I'm seeing some hype for it on Reddit in unrelated game recommendations threads - at least one today where someone asked for something like Stardew, and one of the first replies was for RF5. It pops up in a lot of unexpected recommendation threads.
I wonder if the quiet hype is because like Kikki said, it's kinda a clone of 4, so there's not a ton to speculate about. I remember how hyped I was for Tides of Destiny and Frontier, both of which had new systems, settings, etc. I feel like the big new fun feature is the 3D graphics, but folks aren't hyped because that's kind of expected now, and it's expected at a level that exceeds RF5's budget. ^_^; We already know how to craft, we know what monsters we'll be fighting, we probably know absolutely everything about the farming system, we kinda know what to expect in the dungeons.
The story and characters are different, which I am super hyped about, but in a way that lends itself more to looking forward to context than reading too much beforehand. But I loved the story and social elements from 4, so I'm really looking forward to that level of detail in 5. Though, I will say, I was slightly more excited about the ranger story back when I thought they'd skipped the amnesia this time. But Rune Factory can do that plot as many times as it wants.

I was always more of a HM fan too, but after PoOT being just ok I'm looking forward to something a bit more meaty. Same here. I honestly have never been a huge Rune Factory fan except for the first one. After that, i wasn't really thrilled that the player couldn't be a female. We had to wait all the way till four before we could. In two you could technically play as your daughter if you choose to, but it was too weird for me. Same with the PS3 rune factory game (the one that Raguna is not it). The player has to beat the game before being able to be play as the girls. Still, i do see why people really enjoy these games. Rune Factory 4 was pretty good actually.JayDucky03 wrote:I was always more of a HM fan too, but after PoOT being just ok I'm looking forward to something a bit more meaty. The official website for RF5 finally updated, but not in way I expected. The "Daily Life & Adventure" and "Products" sections are still grayed out and unavailable, but the "DLC" tab has been fully removed. A redditor, HifumiisBest, pointed this detail out first and even took pictures showing the before and after.

AH DUCKS! Thank you so much for letting me know about this lmaoPaleSunflower wrote:It does make sense. A big reason why I bought RF4:SE (and HM:OW) in the first place was because I didn't like what I saw from SoS:PoOT and decided to try other farming games instead.
Also, spoiler for a type of regular monster, I guess.Spoiler:

I've been thinking a lot about RF4 vs RF5 as we're drawing closer to the release date, and something occurred to me. A lot of the reviews I found online (which were sparse and vague) said that RF4/RF4S is better than RF5, but RF5 is still a good game. I'm just wondering if RF4 truly is better, or if it's gaining unique benefits. RF4 was the only 3ds Rune Factory game for years, it was the last Rune Factory game we had for years, and it had a rerelease for the Switch. So I'm wondering if RF4 is just getting benefits from both being a new game and also some powerful nostalgia.
It's just surprising and a little annoying that I can randomly search tumblr and the reddit thread for RF5 reviews and hype and most of the stuff I find is about RF4. Because I want to hype myself up; I want to read positive reviews and threads about people's favorite bachelor/bachelorettes and monsters and which bosses they hated to fight. But most of it is just buried in RF4. It makes sense, a lot more people have access to RF4, but even the people who got the Japanese version aren't talking about it!
Maybe I'm just being petty, but I'm still mad about it.

I've watched a few reviews on the Japanese release of RF5 on YouTube, mainly from MilkyT and Potatofuji since both reviews were spoiler-free. From my understanding, RF5 has amazing character interactions that are on par with RF4...but when it comes to the story, that's when it tanks. I think a few players have noted how you can beat the entire story within early Summer of year 1 (much like PoOT, ouch) and the plot was somewhat simple/predictable? I've heard that it's on the same difficulty and length as RF3, but I wouldn't know myself, since I want to go into this game as blind as possible with zero spoilers. Sounds like it won't have the same "arcs/chapters" as RF4 handled it's story.
I know there's also a general complaint on the saturated colors and lack of decoration. I booted up my copy of RF4S since I was curious on how it looked, and I genuinely forgot just how beautifully detailed it was. Even if Selphia is a "small" town, I think I'd rather have a small, compact town, than a town that looks too vast for it's own good. But who knows, maybe I'll really enjoy Rigbarth's layout!
I think the final conclusion is that RF5 is less of a sequel to RF4, and more of a re-introduction to a once canceled franchise. Do remember that the original developers went full on bankrupt with how absolutely STUFFED RF4 was...at least I'm assuming the sales of RF4 initially didn't go as planned which lead to their bankruptcy? I think that's why the overall vibes of RF4 felt very much like a: this is the end, we're chucking everything at a wall to see what sticks! Tying up loose ends with the Native Dragon lore, with Ethelberd and Sechs lore, Earthmate origins and their lore, etc etc. Also, maybe the hype feels so low because this game was first announced over three years ago? I didn't believe it myself at first, but sure enough it was teased in the 2/13/2019 Nintendo Direct. It honestly doesn't feel like three entire years have gone by! Like I swear 2022 just began, and we're already a quarter done with the year. I am excited that it's nearly less than ten days till release though!
