Raven and Micah were shifters with no visible animal features in their human form. The RF4 guardians likely took their bosses form AFTER merging with the bosses themselves and were likely humanoid (w/e races there were ar the time).
It could be just a new term for animal shifters. But it's also quite likely that they're a new race entirely and may not shift into their monster form but kind of...permanent cat girl/guy mode.
Edit:
@Rune <3
My current rankings for candidates are
Guys: Martin = Papa Wolf > Reinhardt = Butterfly Boy >> Cecil > Uncle
Gals: White Haired Gal > Freckles = Fuuka > Scarlett > Priscilla ??? Witch girl
TBH most of the boys are really close. Girls Im less impressed by in general but a few are cute. Just wish we had more older ones.
It worries me a little that RF5 hasn't mentioned anything about s/s relationships when SoS already has for its new game. My only solace on that atm is that SoS has had it before, so it's easier to reintroduce while it might be a "thing" for RF or something. Idk how much any of that logic holds up in marketing games, but I sure am hoping. RF4's sprite swap solution really wasn't for me and I'd rather just pretend I'm straight than live with the misgendering.
That said, I'll be a straight man for you silver haired girl and Lucy <3
I was also surprised to see Murakamo become a marriage option. He's so masculine, I assumed he'd be a regular villager after seeing him in the trailer, but I'm happy he's here and he might be one of my favorite guys so far. I also love that RF can't seem to decide on lore for its monster hybrid people and just keep adding new things, love that for her
The official twitter site posted a new teaser video showing the inn and our first glance at Murakumo's portrait.
Seems he'll be a lot of people's favorite.

Actually, just as SoS was confirmed on the website, there's debatably a similar passage on the RF5 website already depending on how it's translated. The s/s reading of the passage seems right to me, because a section about marriage candidates would make more sense to be introducing the ability to choose men/women to date, rather than bring up the already established ability to choose a man/woman MC.
Murakumo looks better and better to me the more that I see him.

Also great to see more Murakumo content this quickly, thanks nongo for sharing! Count me in as part of his growing fanbase.
Oh, that's pretty neat. It IS rather ambiguous though, so I think people shouldn't get their hopes up too high just in case. Also keep in mind that unlike SoS, they may limit s/s options to specific characters only.
I just adore the designs we've seen so far for all of the candidates. There's not a bad one in the bunch, as far as I'm concerned.
A famitsu is coming out today/tomorrow. It wont have new marriage candidates in it, but there's a spread about the first three bachelor/bachelorettes. I wonder if we might get a new tidbit about them.

Yeah, I agree, I haven't seen it translated like this before so it does give me some hope, but it still feels rather ambiguous, so I'm still worried. I do appreciate this update though!
I would also hate if they only made some characters available for s/s, that'd drive me crazy. While I think it can work for games like Dragon Age, I think RF would be pretty poorly suited for it, though that doesn't mean I don't think they'd pull that (especially when Fire Emblem just did this recently.) Idk, in games like DA, it feels like they're committed to making it part of their character more, but games like this and FE it just feels extremely arbitrary and locking away options for people interested in s/s... Especially when all the candidates are still available for straight marriage and none are s/s locked (like FE again lol).
The Famitsu stuff isn't fully out yet, but I'm looking forward to it. The preview article said that RF5's gonna get 4 pages, so I assume it'll be all the marriage candidates out so far in there. Hopefully we'll get confirmation on s/s marriage, but I'm fully prepared to wait until like, the final months before the game's out before we get confirmation one way or the other.
Murakumo's portrait work is amazing. Like man, his art is so good. I don't think there's a single design I've disliked so far. At least Alice doesn't have that weird... armor that Frey had.
I hope we find out something about the grey haired girl soon! She seems to be the most popular one around here. And she's the one with the least information besides witchy girl. I'm getting so hyped. T.T Also really hoping they announce s/s soon. Did they announce s/s for Mineral Town early on, or was it a surprise?
They confirmed it quite late, not that long before release, iirc. Even after confirming that it would have the 'best friend' system in Japan, or whatever it was called, Xseed wouldn't comment on how that system would be localized until we were fairly far along the path to release. I think it ended up coming out as part of a localization blog, but my memory tends to lump a lot of details together, so...

We had it confirmed by some Chinese new outlets, and then on some forums since people there got the game early, so it was pretty late in the process.
But with SoS: PoOT they put it up day one on the Japanese website, so that's why I'm a little bit nervous! I just would really love it to be confirmed sooner than later
And yessss I love her design so much ;_; I'm gonna have a hard time on deciding who to go with first if I can be bi
