I'm in winter of year one. I'd had about 8 snow storms. 3 of them were in a row. My animal's stress bar is really high. I do have a material stone pen outside for the chickens to go in. But when I put them in there and get a good couple of days to bring it down, I get snowstorm, snowy day and more snowstorms again. My cows seem to be alright, because I can just brush them then that depletes their bar just enough not to be a problem. It's my chickens that are the problem.
Is there anything I can do to keep the chickens' stress levels down? I have 4 of them. I'm trying to earn some money to expand the coop to get one more, but losing days because of snow storms isn't helping.
I don't have the help of the harvest sprites. I couldn't figure out how to hire them. All they do is talk to me, then nothing else happens.
I do prefer to keep all my animals in the barn/coop if I'm given the choice. I spend all day out and around the islands trying to find stuff to sell to earn money, by the time I get back to the farm it's too late to be fussing around with getting all my animals back in their barn/coop. On the days I have to de-stress the chickens, I have to stay closer to home and make less money.

It might be kind of late in the season for this, but... To hire the sprites, you have to talk to the red harvest sprite on the island who stands off by himself. You unlock new ones by raising the hearts of the team members that are already there. I’ve forgotten if you have to raise the friendship of the sprites first, but I think I’m thinking of the animals on the Wild Animal Island.
The orange/animal team likes sweets and animal products and pet food. They’re tiny, so I really suggest using the touchscreen to avoid throwing the gift on the ground. You only have to talk to/give a gift to one member a day, but they all get new dialogue for each new heart, just like the other villagers. If you don’t befriend any other team, at least do this one ‘cause they’re super-useful.
On a side note, I remember being particularly fond of one of the orange sprites... I think his name was Nero. He goes from not being able to talk to you at all to being able to say he loves you as you raise the team’s heart level. Adorable.
Anyway, the orange team is pretty useful even if you only have one sprite. First, don’t bother with the destressing option. The most useful things they can do is feed all of your animals in a location (barn, coop, pet shed, pig shed) or move them in or out of that location. I think the small/1-sprite enchantment lasts for 3 days with a 1 or 2 day rest period afterwards.
I think the weather is set something like 6 days in advance in this game, so if you don’t mind skipping ahead, you could always sleep/reset a couple days and see what’s coming up. Or if not (or you’re too lazy like me), that’s okay, too.
If you find a blizzard’s coming up, you can ask them to feed the chickens. They’ll feed them even through a storm. On the other hand, if there’s clear weather ahead, you can ask them to move the animals in or out of their barn. The way this works is they’ll wander around inside the barn. When you want to move your animals out, talk to the sprite, and they’ll all be moved outside. When you’re ready to move then back in, just talk to the sprite again. Doing this on clear days actually lowers their stress more than even the large destressing enchantment I’ve found, and it costs fewer sprites to do. If you can get at least 2 sprites, you’ll only have to feed the chickens on the days when the sprite you hired goes to rest since you can rotate them.
I feel like a typed out way more than I originally intended, so I hope this all made some sort of sense! D;
