Backlog 2022
I am so tempted to remove FF7 from my backlog, but it's such a fun game! I never defeated it before, but I did get to the third disc, which should just be the final boss of the game. However, I died in the same spot with the same conditions again; I defeated 3 bosses and then a mob of 3 enemies, who are faster than Cloud, let him get one attack in, and before he heals gets put to sleep and killed.
I also got Graham to move out of my town and I used all 86K of my Nook Miles to find Quinn but to no avail. I wonder if she's in my queue or if I just have bad luck.

Maaan that was an evening of Elden Ring. Four bosses tonight, two of them pretty tough. One of them REAL tough. Mild spoiler for the first area.
SO proud of myself for that one. The camera got me killed tonight more than anything, I think. :D That is what they say, isn't it? True final boss is the camera? Proud of myself for even making it this far. The reward tomorrow is a little exploration to earn money for some new fancy spells, and then I'll venture back into the castle for adventures in running past enemies to unlock bonfires.
And maybe a boss if I'm feeling spicy.
Finally ran into a few NPCs who've started piecing the lore together. I don't know all that much about George RR Martin's writing style... but there's definitely a lot of Game of Thrones in the back story. Fantasy politics, that is. With a Miyazaki coat of paint. Nice twist on both, honestly.

I'm around 10ish hours into Triangle Strategy. I'm enjoying it a lot, but I know it's gonna be really hit or miss for some. Why? Well, it's because it's a medieval political war drama visual novel with a turn based tactical JRPG attached. For ever 10 cutscenes, you'll have maybe 2 battles. I personally love this, it reminds me a lot of the Utawarerumono trilogy where it's more focused on the story it has to tell rather than having to grind levels to continue. It also gives me Suikoden and Chrono Cross vibes when it comes to the sheer amount of recruitable party members.
Said party recruiting might be my favorite part of the game. I LOVE it when tactical JRPGs allow me to have variety and let me do battles with whoever I want. While customization is limited (no generic units like Final Fantast Tactics), the different kind of characters you can recruit are both extremely varied and allow a lot of fun on the battle field. Who you end up having access to all depends on how you answer story decisions, who you talk to, how you do in battles, what kind of battles you focus on (in the mock battle menu) and a bunch of other stuff I don't quite understand. For example, my 'convictions' (the invisible meters that go up and down depending on everything in the last sentence) went up after I bought a shitton of stuff from the merchant. It also went up when I talked to a cat lmao.
Anyways, because I don't know what route I'm in (there's a total of 4 according to people who got the game early) and I know that you can lose certain units by entering into specifc routes, I've been mainly focusing on leveling the people I've had the pleasure to recruit. My personal favorites being; Narve - an extremely OP mage with access to every element, Medina - an alchemist who can throw items twice in a turn, Jens - a blacksmith who can make ladders on any ledge or cliff, and Piccoletta - a literal child who can duplicate herself AND throw items. My army has very few actual fighters and more regular-« Mr.Gourmet's hat » people with weird skillsets.
I'm currently trying to do Frederica's route, though I really have no idea what I'm doing. I'm just siding with her at every opportunity, but then everyone else does too!? If I end up accidently getting the true route on my first go, I'm gonna laugh.

I'm trying really hard not to impulse buy Triangle Strategy. ^_^; I'll probably love it, but it sounds like it will depend heavily on whether I'll be able to get into the plot. A lot of folks are getting it at work, so I'll see how they do with it. They will probably love it, and I will get it anyway, but I have too many big games to play right now!
Been playing a lot of Pokemon BD. I am at the infuriating section that I remember from the originals where you can over-level your pokemon ahead of getting the next badge. I had to rotate 4 pokemon out of my party, and probably a 5th, before the 3rd gym leader. ;_; I also fiddled with the Pokemon Bank. Got it working, it still has all my old stuff in it, but the DS 'mons I wanted were still stranded on HG. Moved several over to White 2 via the hideous minigame. Need to move those to X, but... that's a lot of work. I was working on filling the National Dex in the Bank, and I have two games worth of 'mons stripped from carts in there. I'd like to add all the gen 1/2 legendaries, then migrate the Bank to Home, then use the long chain of games to fill in more of the national dex in Home, but... ugh. I will beat BD instead.
Also been playing Portia, which I was secretly hoping to finish before RF5 came out, but there's NO WAY. I'm working on the drill at the end of the desert area, 60 hours in, and there's still so much plot left. But I am loving this game still, there is so much stuff, and the social part of it is ridiculously in-depth. Also, I finally beat Higgins. XD

Yeah, when I tried the demo I was afraid of that. I love story and deep lore, but I was put to sleep during the 3rd or 4th cutscene with only one battle that lasted about 10 minutes. I wanted to like it since the first demo showed that choices were gonna matter a lot, but not for that many cutscenes.Bluie wrote:I'm around 10ish hours into Triangle Strategy. I did get past the part that kept killing me in FF7, but then I was going through the flashback in FF7 and it made me remember that I did already play this game through to completion, so I'm crossing it off my backlog. I love FF7 a lot, but I don't think I need to justify a second playthrough right this moment.
Today's extra-extra-long backlog update brought to you in these sections:
I am trying to complete this Kirby demo, and Kirby is, as always, an adorable pink chonk, but I just don't understand what is fun about breathing in things and then spitting them out at other things. Nor running things over with a car. It's fun for two minutes, for me, then I'm bored. I've saved the big-eared blue thing, though. And an orange thing. More than one orange thing. It's all very, very cute, but not what I'd call compelling. They do offer you an incentive code for finishing the demo, though, to get free stuff. Good marketing tactic. I've deleted it now, though. (I finished the demo while putting my thoughts together in this post, lol.)
~
I've gotten pretty used to being at mom and dad's all week, and
~
I could have had Genji move to Wodewyrd today, but I forgot his card at my parents place, and I also really wanted to finish moving the house, first. It's in the perfect place, now. I also axed the idea of having Pietro in town, in favour of keeping the smug villager the game gave me: Julian. He's pretty weird, too, as the game's only unicorn, living in a cloud/zodiac house. I can come up with a sparkly cloudy star theme for him, somehow. It's easier to keep the one I have, and Julian is less jarring to the eyes than Pietro anyway!
I stopped progressing my HHP part of the game, but I need to do a bit more of that. I want to get to the next milestone. I already designed 3 facilities and I've unlocked the catalogue for ordering (from Wardell.) I need to get to being able to design villager houses (27 clients/jobs, I think?) Plus I want all the partition wall and pillar DIYs from Nico, too. I don't know what my next goal is in HHP. I think the next facility is at 22, but that's a way off...I think I was at 12 or 13. I'd really like to find a tractor, too, to complete my farm. I'll ask my cousin if she has one! That kid has everything. Maybe I can order it from Wardell?
Anyway, that'll be today's very relaxed goal...do more HHP and complete the last dungeon of Act II in DQXI before Tuesday. Though I really just have to unclench my insides (and my spasming spine!) to get back in good shape for next week.
EDIT: Limburg was in the restaurant, so I got a tractor
~
EDIT #2: I opened DQXI! I even feel like I could play Portia, today. My back is in very bad condition, but the rest of me feels much more settled, now, even though I dread going back MORE this week than last. Grandma has grown to feel more gremlin-like to me, now, unfortunately, though I still find her cute once in a while. (I think it's fortunate, now, that we were never close or really knew each other at all.) Maybe it's more about the fact that the sun was starting to come up at 6:30, today. Winter really does a number on me, even when I do as well as I did this year.
~
EDIT #3: Woo, finished DQXI! I turned Luminary (Lev) and Erik's AI to 'show no mercy', Serena's to 'healing', and Sylvando's to 'fight wisely', and it got me through the entire final dungeon AND all the boss fights! I swear...best AI battling I've ever come across. But honestly...I have no fondness for this game. It's just not my thing, and I don't find I care about knowing what happens next. I have no desire to play Act III and am calling DQXI complete. Off the backlog it goes!
I am going to try to complete 2 more games in March, to bring 2022's total up to, uh...five? *checks list* Yep, five. Moon Hunters is grandma-safe, as is HM: One World, and Spiritfarer, too. Probably Slime Rancher, too, though I could only play that one when alone...too involved to play in handheld while sitting with grandma watching a gardening show, trying to understand and agree as she tells me what a shame it is that the government keeps trying to keep people from selling their trees because they don't want them to be able to make money. (I hardly ever know what grandma really means, but I'm not sure she knows, either!) Anyway, I'm going to try to get two of those done, cuz a bigger completion number would feel nice. The three that I have is bare-minimum for March.
- Kirby Demo
- Grandma and gaming don't mix
- ACNH
- DQXI completed!
- Loose gaming hopes/plans for the rest of the month

I'm in chapter 11 of Triangle Strategy now. Had a pretty intensive investigation section in chapter 10 that I managed to pass by the skin of my teeth. The flow chat of this game's events seems pretty intense, again, like a VN. I'm interested on what route I'm in/going to get into, but I feel like I'm about to lose Benedict because I do not agree with his convictions and he is PUSHING me. I imagined he'd be the first to go as he's rubbed me the wrong way since the first demo.

Spoiler:
I beat one route/one playthrough of Best Friend Forever on the Nintendo Switch. I got Felix's CG. So, for now, I'm finished with it. It took about 5 hours to beat one route.
I started playing The Kids We Were on Switch after that. It's really interesting so far. A child goes back 33 years in the past in order to save his family and change the future.
I started playing the Puzzle and Dragons Z + Super Mario Bros. Edition on the 3DS. I started the Super Mario Bros. version. It starts getting difficult around World 3.
I also started up the Mysterious Stars 3D: A Fairy Tale on the 3DS. I forgot that the series was badly translated into English, but I might only poke at it here and there. I can deal with the bad translation, but I had an error early on that closed the game. That's bad form on the game creators.
Back to piddling in Elden Ring. Whenever it was that I went through Stormveil Castle I lucked out and took the exact route to the boss door, and haven't been brave enough to go through. There's no summons to help me, I'm scared.
So I've been exploring, both in and outside of the castle, mostly leveling up my weapons (doing a sword/staff combo atm).
I'm level 40 now, and I keep seeing people saying things about how they've put 40 POINTS into individual stats... and that breaks my brain. How do you have enough time in the day to sleep and eat and shower, and play this game enough to get that many levels. It's such a huge game, I don't even know how people have beaten it already.
I am going back and fighting bosses that scared me too much at the beginning of the game, at least. Surviving what you couldn't before is a good feeling.

Spoiler:
Played Harvest Moon: One World in a marathon session today. I was wound up; even in the shower I found myself rehearsing helpful things to say to grandma when she wants to 'go home', or is unwilling to shower even though her last was a week ago, or says something weirdly racist again, but once I got the game going properly, it totally took my mind off of everything.
I had to restart because I couldn't remember how to play, but even so, the story seems like it'll be complete in 12-15 hours. I've already gotten 5...are they medallions? I have 5 of 6, anyway. This last one will take more time as I'm going to need to wait a full season for my blacknose sheep to be harvestable. Oh well, I need to farm a load of cabbage during fall anyway and it's going to take me a while just to acquire the seeds.
It's honestly super fun. Yeah, the huge sheets of ugly green textures look like patterned auto-fill from graphics programs from when I was in middle school (meaning: 30 years ago!) but the content is awesome. If they made the landscapes prettier and gave the events and characters more depth, fleshed them out further, this would be on par with a dream combo of Trio of Towns and ANB. And it's grandma-safe to boot!
I will cross it off my backlog when the story is complete, but I may continue to play after, as there are plenty of interesting crop, animal, recipe and customization goals to go for. I decided I can buy another new game if I manage to complete at least 6 new games (altogether in 2022) by the end of April, but that's not looking like a problem since finishing One World will put me at 4 already in early March. Maybe I should up it to 8? But I probably don't need pressure in my gaming right now anyway; might leave the goal at 6.
EDIT: Back to my parents' place. Managed to squeeze Genji into Wodewyrd this morning in a ten minute play session. Mornings are more relaxed, since grandma tends to nod off repeatedly in the 9-12 time frame. I'm more than half done getting my villagers arranged. Bolded ones are yet to come.

- Cranky: Kabuki
- Lazy: Lucky, Clay
- Smug: Julian
- Jock: Genji
- Normal: Coco
- Peppy: Tangy
- Snooty: Petri
- Sisterly: I have Reneigh, but I wanted Phoebe, or failing that, Fucsia, but I don't have their cards. Reneigh is okay for now. Not sure if I'll fill slot 10 with a third lazy (Sasha) or a second snooty (Ankha). sasha is so cute it's ruinous, but I think Ankha would contribute more to my island.
Welp, my day yesterday was spent working on Umineko (End of the Golden Witch) while doing this:
While I'm not completely caught up with NieR Reincarnation's metta, getting 9S, my favorite character, fully ascended and battle ready was quite a chore. It's only because I'm on vacation that I allowed myself to waste a day on gacha grinding while another game played in the background to keep me sane. I love NieR, and I do love the story this game is conveying, but the fact that you need to dedicate so much time to just be battle ready to enjoy said story drives me bonkers. This is some top tier Yoko Taro story telling and it's super frustrating it's stuck behind a grindfest OR paywall. I STILL need to level up other aspects of the character to keep up with future metta but I'm out of the in-game currency and, shocker, need to grind a shitton to get more. *sigh*
The plus side is that it gives my hands something to do while reading Umineko. I'm on video 85/150 now and while I am enjoying it, walls of text wear me out and I need something to keep me from getting distracted. Being outside anime territory now isn't enough to stop me from tabbing away every 5 minutes, but if I keep my hands busy, it certainly helps.
I think today I'm going to finish End of the Golden Witch and then hyperfocus on Triangle Strategy til I finish my first playthrough. I'm not sure if I'm going to jump into a second playthrough right away as while playing blind is fun the first time around, I don't want to waste my time doing a second if there's a chance I'll end up in the same route again. I will probably wait until there's a solid guide on how to get what ending before jumping back in.

I think I only have 5-10 hours left of lunar. Haven't played it yet today, but I'll probably try to later. I'm guessing it's closer to ten than to five, but still not a lot left. Also been playing xenosaga and I really like it. I'm nearly ten hours into that, but I'm going to spend some time next time I play leveling up/preparing for the boss since I lost to it almost instantly the first time. Think this one might be finished sooner rather than later. I haven't really taken more than a few days away from it, even when I've hit a part I had to retry a few times. Trying to get as much side stuff as I can as well while I play. The game just kinda grasped my attention right away once I actually started playing it.
The big question is whether I should buy episode 2 right away when I finish the first one or whether I should wait. I'm not sure how long it will take me to finish both episodes but either way I'll have to wait to play the last one because I can't afford it anytime soon.

My poor little cousin finally got around to buying herself two new games. One was Monster Hunter stories 2...no problem there. Unfortunately, the other was Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive, as she played it on my switch and was liking it...but somehow she ended up buying XC2 by mistake on the eshop.
Kiddo doesn't like to read and always skims as shallowly as she thinks she can get away with. When she was wee and we were doing her reading homework, she'd read the first syllable only, then start trying to guess the remainder of the word rather than actually reading it. When she tried XC2 a while back, she didn't particularly like it, so she was upset at her discovery.
It appears that she still has that kind of a habit. I feel bad for her, though, putting $80 down on the wrong game; I'll just put XCDE onto her switch via my account. You're restricted to being able to play it with that account only, but that's fine...I never use that account. It's a purchasing account only, for the very purpose of being able to share my games with my sisters (cousin kind of counts as a much, much younger sister.)
~
I've tried Murder by Numbers now and I like it
Though when I'm in the middle of a puzzle, it's almost too distracting for grandma-time. The story isn't very interesting (at least not yet) so it's much easier to A-button my way through story portions than to talk to grandma about the egg-shaped lip balm in her purse (that she thinks is a 'small pink ball' and wants to know why its in there) while in the middle of a picross puzzle. It's probably not my afternoon game after all, though I like the puzzles, so I'll complete it in my normal gaming time.
~
Too tired to play more One World last night, or early this morning before 8AM; busy life-sim games require more mental energy than picross games, surprisingly. I think it's the simplicity of number puzzles as opposed to the million different bits you have to remember and keep together in a Harvest Moon game. I'll just marathon One World on the weekends, then. I only have one medallion and the shrine left to do in the story so I can probably finish it this coming weekend once my blacknose sheep matures, then tootle around with any crop/etc goals after in more leisurely fashion.
Gonna run in to the chiro as quick as I can this morning, after grandma's had breakfast and has gone back to nap in front of the TV. My back is in terrible shape atm, really painful cuz he's worked the problem back to its source...I had to go downstairs to get pills this morning at 5:30 AM and made the dogs bark because they have five minute memories and forget I'm in the house if they're not looking at me constantly. Ugh...better start keeping a bottle of pills upstairs from now on, to avoid any unnecessary racket before anyone else is awake.

I've tried Murder by Numbers now and I like it

Too tired to play more One World last night, or early this morning before 8AM; busy life-sim games require more mental energy than picross games, surprisingly. I think it's the simplicity of number puzzles as opposed to the million different bits you have to remember and keep together in a Harvest Moon game. I'll just marathon One World on the weekends, then. Seeing you having fun with One World is tempting me to go back to it, Kikki.
It is a lot to manage but at least once you've got the story knocked out there's no real need to keep animals or rush much of anything. Just the fun of hybrids.
Feel better, by the way! I'm sure all the extra stress isn't helping things.

Castle Stormveil cleared! I got quite a bit over-leveled for the big fight and ended up clearing it in one go. REALLY enjoying my current build. Bleed weapon with an ice-based Ash of War on it, and it STACKS! The damage! If I can find a better bleed weapon I'll be set for the rest of the game, I think. Took a couple of days to get my new build up to par because I wasted so many smithing stones and had to get them unlocked in the shop to raise this bleed weapon. :D Whoops.
Elden Ring seems to REALLY heavily reward aggressive play. Afaik it's something like Bloodborne, but... a little more clear? I think the particle effects that appear when you attack are the indicator. Not ENTIRELY sure, though.
Now I've got some questing to do for some NPCs before I keep going with the main quest. I'd really rather find a better weapon BEFORE I move on. Perfectly in line with everything Souls-Like, there are a LOT of characters with sad stories that I feel bad for/want to help.

Congrats Miko! I'm still doing bleed as well, it's super fun. I recently unlocked the ability to respec, but I'm pretty satisfied with where I am now. There's some enemies that can't be bled at all that are kind of a pain to fight, but they're not all that common and fighting something that's weak to bleed is just too satisfying.
I'm 3 demigods in on Elden Ring now. I don't know how far I am, but the cutscene/NPC dialogue after the last one I fought are making it seem like I'm getting near the end of the story, though I'm certain there's quite a few more major fights left for me. I still have a big chunk of the map left to explore, too. Also, let me just say, the main Caelid boss was probably the first time in this game that I was just straight up not having a good time. I ended up cheesing it and it still took me like, 10+ more tries once I learned the strategy that I used because most of it's moves were oneshotting me. There's always That One Boss and I hope that was it, because oof.
