Been looking around a lot and Fae Farm is getting TONS of hype. So much that it makes me uncomfortable...it doesn't feel balanced, and I hate when I can only find gushing about any game, no matter how good it may actually be. I was really annoyed with Tears of the Kingdom feedback around release time because it was SO unbalanced and though it IS a great game, it has a lot to complain about, too. Anyway, I can't stand it when I only hear good stuff, so I had to keep looking.
I did manage to find something close to consensus on the characters. Apparently Fae Farm characters and relationships are very shallow and boring, the characters are not unique, and don't have much development. Relationships have no rewards. Things like that. So if you're into sims for the relationships/characters specifically, that may be a good reason to pass Fae Farm by. Or at least look more deeply into it until you find a more balanced array of reviews/etc.
Since the criticism of the characters seems to come even from those otherwise enthused with the game, I'm hoping the devs will improve the characters and patch in more interesting dialogue or events, but there's no guarantee of that, of course. I assume it's more unlikely that they will than that they won't.
People do seem to largely find the game really addictive in gameplay, though, so it seems worthwhile unless character/relationships are your primary source of enjoyment. If screaming gushing praise from every quarter makes anyone as uncomfortable as it makes me, then here's a video review from someone who decided he didn't think the game was worth buying. (He also has a six hour video of him first trying the game, if you want to see his reactions 'live' rather than a more condensed review format.)
