Is there a strategy to catching fish in Mystic Valley or does it rely a lot on RNG?

I've been trying to catch the big fish to get enough for the card that will make the girl's older brother help move the log. Using the fly rod and have managed to catch one. However, I can't get a second one, with the lime just straining and even snapping, and being forced to pull rather than circle with the fish trying to get away. Is there some strategy to get the fish rather than having my fly rod snap? Or is luck based to an extent? How can I prevent the circle changing to pulling given straining the line too much red will make it snap?

If your line is breaking, you may need a better rod, though there is a bit of luck in there too
