Does it effect the game in any way? So far it seems about 20 days have passed and nothing is exactly effected. And I do go home a lot to save the game, which makes days pass often. Can you just ignore it or does the amount of days that pass have any significant effect?

Yes, you can ignore the number of days. I don't recall them being of any significance.
