Does each rod in Mystic Valley have different odds or catch different fish?

I need to catch a fish of certain length for the boy near the waterfall. Though it seems most except the small fish are ignoring or even avoiding my basic fly rod. A better fly rod costs over thousand points which I don't have. Does each rod catch different fish? Also how often must you buy a new rod?

I would try a different fly before working towards earning points for new equipment.

When fish ignore your line, then you should try different bait/fly/lure.
