Hi, so I’m on my second year fishing festival and trying to best Lanna. I am able to catch large fish but no matter how many times I reset and Large fish in Meadow island I can’t get a fish bigger than 8.5 dots in size, which does not seem enough to beat her.
At this point I don’t know if I’m doing something wrong in the actual fishing process (I press Y as soon as I see the ! above my characters head). Or if no fish on Meadow island is big enough to win the festival.
Anyone who has won the festival and can shed some light?

Hmm... ok, so checking an old JP guidebook about the fishing tournament in SI, and if I'm reading it right, the entry score is a multiplication of fish type x quality
fish = 1 for small fish, 2 for medium fish, or 3 for large fish
quality = determined by the fish size. Base is 100 points of size plus 1 point for every cm of size for small and medium fish over the base, and plus 2 or 3 points for every 1 cm over the base for large fish (the book does not clarify when it is +2 or +3)
So let's say your large fish is 120 cm. In theory, that means 3 x (100 + (20 x 2)) = 420 points
3rd place = 300 to 399
2nd place = 400 to 499
winner = 500+ points
Freshness is also important. Each dot of freshness is worth 20 points, with a minimum of 150 points of freshness (7.5 dots) required to rank in the festival.
