Typing in Japanese

On my computer, my Japanese set up is really easy for me to type. When I type it in a post it looks good to me, then it comes out as garbeldygook after I post it.
I've tried changing the font settings on my browser (I use Safari) should I use a different browser? What else can I do?

When you submit japanese text to the forum, it codes it to look like #(bunch of numbers);. Is that what you are refering to?
