yeah, i probably won't be able to get alexandrite for a while because have like, no motivation to do any mining. i'll let the triple posting slide though, cause i accidentally hit qoute instead of edit on my post so yeah...and i didn't even realize until i finished posting it. i was like "Oh <<Puppy Doodoo>>!" i mean like, wow, talk about being a blonde

Yes, you can get it in the first year. But you need to be in the right mine. Adamantite is found on floor 10 of the spring mine, but Alexandrite is found on floor 50 of the lake mine.
