It easier to buy one chicken, get it to lay an egg, put the egg in the incubator and let it hatch. I have noticed that chickens that are born on your farm start out with 2 hearts while a chicken that is bought starts out with 0 hearts.Also, the chickens who are born on your farm sometimes gain hearts faster.
Oh I know how annoying useing the touch glove is, I have 5 chicken and 5 ducks.

Third year, I have a stone chicken coop and four chickens. Wow
2nd year's not at all bad!

I buy one chicken, have it lay one egg, let the egg ahtch. Sell the first chicken. When that chick grows up take its egg and incubate it. Then just keep doing that until i have as many as i want!

First of all you are not a loser ^^
Second, just pet them by using the touch screen glove, also let them graze on the fields if it's not raining (remember to place a fence incase of wild dogs).
Oh and chickens you hatch do earn faster heart points. (Well mine does) ^^

it is too hard for me to have a social life and use the touch glove on all my animals (i have 23...i should change my siggy...) so i hired the yellow team

the tough-glove ruind my tough screen, i have a real lot of scratches now =P but the chickens deserve to be petted now and then ^^ well, i don't have chickens anymore, their coop collapsed in a snowstorm... never build a chicken coop from lumber!
