I do think they changed the "central theme" of HM. In SNES it was simply, "Farm and ranch till you drop and pick up a lovely lady along the way to become the ultimate farmer/rancher."
Now I see it as more like a, "To be an ultimate farmer/rancher you must balance yourself among your farm work, visiting characters/marriage, and other daily activities such as fishing and mining."
The HM universe has simply expanded past farming and ranching. If it didn't expand, no one would really like to play it since it would be the same game over and over again.
I agree.

high five. even though its still technically cheating, i only use the glitches for the island.

but marvelous interactive is partly to blame. the farming system seems to be the same from game to game. heck, even the mining system gets upgraded from time to time (i'm a full-time miner in my game ^^). the girls change up too so everything but the farming system gets a fresh new look.

and if future hm games follow the livestock affection format of hmds, then they've killed harvest moon's ranching future.
if you ment what i think you ment yes cause it so hard to get your animals to like you i hate it cause i cant win anything cause after like a year with them there at like 3 hearts when their born with 2

But many users here seem after the child is born that they completely get bored or stop playing the game.

Would that mean if the marriage or relationship features weren't added or improved over the years, that Harvest Moon would drop sales and just...officially lose it's attention?

Yeah, I think so. Who would want to buy the same game that they already have, only on a different system with better graphics?

I do that too, but only in games like FoMT where there is basically no point continuing the game unless you want another house or some more events because there is no real plot or storyline.

Yes, marriage/character interactions are a big aspect of Harvest Moon. I do not want to even imagine what HM64 would be without the degree of character interactions. A lot of people had a problem about the lack of marriage in STH. I for one thought the lack of marriage was a nice change, but the lack of farming/ranching on the otherhand was my problem.

I play HM mostly because of wedding/relationships. That's only because I suck at farming.

yeah, i got bored after my child was born in mfomt and just stopped playing. but that's why i'm putting off marriage in hmds. the sprites delay your marriage and bring more focus onto farming. plus, since i'm trying to marry a mineral town girl (and they take forever to woo) my focus tends to be more on farm improvement than marriage.

I like getting married and having kids, but imagine, if you didn't get married, and have kids, wouldn't it still be boring to just farm all day???

well the farming is getting boring because of the daily routines, unlike HM64 where you have a 3 year goal and a focus on the game. HM 64 has been so great because of the 3 year period where you get judged on all the things you have done plus the marrige which does not seem as important there as in FOMT and MFOMT because there is no goal which ppl like marrige because thats a self-made goal from the beginning.

Good thing they made Rune Factory with it's own unique storyline. Instead of just simple farming, dating and everyday life , they added a storyline and the ability to battle, make weapons, magic etc. I hope they take Rune Factory to another level with the next-gen consoles.

Excellent topic, Garnet!

I don't really think the HM has lost its way; I think it's evolution is going off course. When HM first came out for the SNES, the game had 20 different endings to see! In other to see them, you must accomplish so many different tasks in a limited time frame. The game was always fresh when you go back to it. I think that the creators should evolve the series to give the players more goals, more gameplay, and more strategy! By removing the endings and allowing players to play forever, it does make the game dull! More of what I mentioned are pretty straight forward, but I think I'll go more in depth about the strategy aspect of the game.

Add more strategy to the game and make players think more about how they spend their cash and how to make more money. Things like fluctuating prices for your crops so you can come up with different strategies to earn the biggest profits. Manipulate pricing on crops to your advantage based on the market condition. HM has always been about making money and turning around a run down farm.

In my opinion,I think HM would be a lot more fun if it was a little bit like Oblivion lol :) Just because Oblivion has lots of different story lines. But anyway,I think HM hasn't lost itself completely..I mean,it would be pretty boring w/o the marriage thing :(
