i have an axe, but nothing works

You have to upgrade it, or charge up the axe more. Keep using the axe a lot on the stump.

Don't remember, I just know with the axe I have I can chop them.

You have to at least upgrade the axe 1 time and then hit the stump 12 times or 6 charged ones.
