I assumed that as I upgraded my tools, they would become somehow more effective. Well, here I am with a Mountain Ax that still takes twelve hits to take out a stump, a Golden Hammer that still takes forever on boulders, and a fancier hoe and sickle that have no noticeable improvement in usage. I'm not sure if the upgraded fishing rod behaves differently, either.
Is there any point to upgrading the other tools?

Try the charge, that usually works in other HM games. either that or they take up less rp.

Hold B button for a while and you will see your character charging?

Lol it should take 3 hits to break a boulder with the golden hammer, hold b till you see a big circle form, not the first small circle.

the lvl ups just give the tools an extra charge that does more
lvl 1 charge on sickle, first 3 weeds, lvl 2 charge on sickle, first 9 weeds, lvl 3 charge, a hella lot, lvl 4 (is this the last 1 ? if it is it takes out pretty much everything)

Thanks for the replies! Yeah, charging does the trick. Not only do I one-shot mining veins with the hammer, the drops seem to be better when I charge (haven't gotten one piece of scrap iron on full charge yet).
