No, you don't have to be near each other. just go to the shell on the beach and press a. it'll ask you to save and you can say yes, then put wifi connection on the options. You have to add someone to your friend roster first

first: Tell us your friend code or where you posted it so we can put you on our friends list, second: If you want to meet someone online then I suggest you make a schedule of when you are available so as to not frustrate yourself, third and most important input our friend codes into your list so you may communicate with them 'cause otherwise it won't work and you'll just be wasting your time.

Here's my schedule: 5:oo am - 3:oo pm - 10:oo pm - 2:oo am (Weekends) 3:3o pm - 8:oo pm - 11:oo pm (depends on when my mom is home or not) (I can't access my Wifi when her computer is on so if i don't respond to a trade that's why.)
Here's my schedule (in other words, when i can log on^^)
4:30pm-7:00pm (friday)
10:00 am - 6:00 pm (usually) (saturday)
9:00am-10:00am and 5:00pm-8:00pm (also usually) (sunday)
And that's it. Don't bother trying on weekdays, cause i cant go on then^^'
