You have to talk to those people for about 3-5 days (not sure) after that they will begin accepting your gift.
And also if you don't talk to them again for xxx(?) days, they will begin to refuse your gift

For the chicken, im not sure if it's work but it work with my pet (dog/horse)i left it outside and the heart won't decrease. Try it couple days without saving and hope it won't rain.

For the tool, there is no tool upgrading in this harvest moon. In addition, there is a feature called slotting (that's what i call

Just alt f and paste this Wonderful Stones and Tool Upgrades

And you can buy slotted equipment at goran (for tools) and massel (for pet's tool such as brush) but remember to take a look at the slot that they have on the item description at the top left.
For example Brush 0/3 (means it has 3 empty slot that you can enchant)

ooo i get it now, thanks! also lol if someone has isn't busy, can you tell me what the options mean? i have bought chicken coop and when i go to builder guy and click on chicken coop option (i think) it comes up with more and the first one says make it larger

Wait i think i made a mistake in pet. You have to put the feed inside even though your pet outside. There is no feed-ed mark on pets when we leave it outside. Sorry

lol okay, i finally got the incubator after a few attempts lol however all my chicks kinda fall ill after a few days...do i need to feed them?

this also happened with the first chick i got that came with the coop

When you left the chicken outside for awhile, later there will be a feed-ed mark (left of the egg mark). That will tell that your chicken already bloated
