To get 2nd and 3rd gen crops... do you give tartan the SEEDS or the PLANTS?

I know that giving him either with a flower always gives a bag of seeds with the special quality, but is it the same for hybridizing?

You can give him a seed or the plant's fruit. The only exception is Carrots, where you'll have to give him the seed.

A question on mixing flowers with hybrid plants. 1) will it change the plant, such as the name or make it a 3rd generation, or the plant grows up differently? 2) can I mix multiple flowers with the same plant, making it extremely versitile? 3) if I mix a plant and a flower, and then grow that plant, will the seeds I make from it still have the properties of the hybrid plant/flower?

There are only 3 things you can change:
Gemsoil: it grows in any field
Happy Plant: it grow in any season
Upseed: makes it an s-quality seed
You can use all 3 (one at a time) but not all the characteristics are inheritable. That is, an s-quality crop gives you an s-quality seed, but it won't grow in any season, in any soil. Also, If you use 2 s-quality seeds with Tartan, you don't get an s-quality hybrid.

So are you saying that if you mix an S-rank Apple seed and an S-Rank Banana seed you get a B-rank Appage seed? That's a pain! It takes a lot of fertilizer to get S-rank trees. What if you use the fruit instead of the seed?

To answer your question, I don't think it makes any difference, but since I usually use seeds I can't swear. I think that once in a while they may turn out s-rank, or be able to grow in any soil, but not often. I wasted lots of money growing sets of s-quality seeds to start making my hybrids with, and then they all turned out b-quality.

Now I'm finished growing a complete set of 2nd gen hybrids (b quality) and I've got 6 3rd gen crops. So I'm just using an upseed with each of them. I'm in chapter 4, so I've got plenty.

The flowers don't work with trees, but there is a glitch that you can use: put a tree seed in the first slot, and an s-rank crop in the 2nd, and you get an s-rank tree seed.

Yeah well I got an idea. I'll just raise a set of S-rank seeds to add an extra to the hybrids. I know that will work (or something in that effect).
